About the adventure
Create a TTRPG character who feels real enough to leap off the page, is fully connected to your campaign, and ready to play! Whether you’re joining a new campaign, refreshing an old favorite, or struggling to turn loose ideas into something coherent and compelling—this session is designed to help you create a character with depth, clarity, and purpose. Most players struggle with: “I don’t know where to start.” “My backstory feels bland or generic.” “I want motivation, not trauma dumping.” “I don’t know how to tie my character into the world.” “I want an arc, but I’m not sure what it should be.” You don’t have to do any of this alone. In this 60-minute session, we’ll work together to: ✔ Explore who your character truly is ✔ Define core motivations, wounds, and desires ✔ Build a meaningful character arc ✔ Create hooks your DM will love using ✔ Identify roleplay opportunities based on your personality ✔ Ensure your character fits smoothly into your campaign ✔ Shine a light on your character’s potential for growth ✔ Uncover hidden dynamics, secrets, or relationships ✔ Shape your backstory into something memorable and playable No more flat backstories or abandoned concepts; you’ll walk away with a character that feels alive. What You’ll Receive After the Session 🎁 A polished & written backstory (1–2 paragraphs) 🎁 A Character Arc Summary (your emotional trajectory) 🎁 A DM Integration Packet, including: * Hooks * Secrets * Allies/enemies * Roleplay prompts * Session 0 talking points This is everything your DM needs to weave your character naturally into the campaign. - Who This Session Is Perfect For - * First-time players who want help getting started * Experienced players who want deeper narrative character arcs * Players joining a long-term or roleplay-heavy campaign * Anyone who enjoys storytelling but struggles with structure * Anyone who wants a character who feels real * Writers looking to flesh out a concept * DMs who want help creating a PC for themselves

About me
Hey! Call me J. I'm an author and Dungeon Master looking to share my stories and have some fun. I first started DMing around 15 years ago (GURPS, D&D 3.5), but have been using D&D 5e ever since it came out. I tend to write my own campaigns, and focus on building sprawling worlds filled with mystery and adventure where the characters' actions have a concrete effect on the story we tell together. Most times I don't even plan an ending for the campaign—that's up to the players.

Creating your character
All character creation will happen during your 1-on-1 session—NO prep is required. You can show up with a full concept, a vague idea, or absolutely nothing. I’ll guide you the whole way. This session is system-flexible, but we’ll default to D&D 5e because it’s the most widely used (by me, at least). If you’re building a character for another game (PF2E, OSR, Cypher, etc.), just let me know in advance and I’ll adapt the process. - How It Works - You bring whatever you have — from a fully drafted concept to a loose vibe (“edgy druid,” “chaotic scholar,” “former soldier of a fallen kingdom,” etc.). I’ll help you explore: * Who your character truly is * Their motivation, wounds, and desires * Their emotional arc * How they fit into your campaign’s world * Hooks your DM can easily integrate * Secrets, flaws, and relationships * Roleplay opportunities tailored to your style * Together, we’ll build a cohesive, playable identity that fits your campaign and excites your imagination. - Stats & Mechanical Choices - This session is focused on story, personality, and roleplay—not mathematical optimization. However, if you want help selecting classes, subclasses, feats, races, backgrounds, or mechanical hooks that reinforce your story, I’m happy to assist. Stat generation will follow whatever method your own DM uses for your campaign: * Standard Array * Point Buy * Rolled Stats * Hybrid methods If you don’t know your DM’s preference, we’ll create your story foundation first and align the numbers later. - Starting Level - We can build characters at: * Level 1 * Any starting level set by your DM * High-level PCs with established histories * Characters being rebuilt or reimagined mid-campaign Just let me know what level you’re aiming for! - Allowed Books / Sources - This is entirely dependent on your DM and campaign. You tell me what sources are allowed and I’ll stay inside those boundaries. Common options include: * Player’s Handbook * Xanathar’s Guide to Everything * Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything * Fizban’s, Monsters of the Multiverse, or other expansions * Homebrew content your DM approves If you don’t know yet, I can help you craft a backstory that works in any setting and we can adapt details later. - Deliverables - At the end of our session, you will receive: * A polished 1–2 paragraph backstory * A character arc summary (your emotional trajectory) * A “DM Integration Packet” including * hooks * secrets * allies/enemies * roleplay prompts * world tie-ins * a Session 0 conversation template You will walk away ready to play a character who feels real, meaningful, and deeply connected to the campaign.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You don’t need to prepare anything to join this session—it’s designed to work whether you already know your character or have no ideas at all. Still, here’s what you can do to get the most out of your coaching experience: 1. Check your DM’s rules (optional) If this character is for an ongoing or upcoming campaign, it can help to know: * Allowed sourcebooks * Starting level * Stat generation method * Campaign setting (Forgotten Realms, Exandria, homebrew, etc.) * Any bans or limitations If you don’t know yet, no problem — we’ll build a concept that fits any campaign. 2. Have access to a microphone We’ll be talking through your character’s history, personality, desires, and emotional arc. Clear audio helps make the process smooth and collaborative. 3. Join the call You can use StartPlaying’s built-in voice/video tool or your preferred platform. If you prefer Discord or Google Meet, just let me know when you book. 4. Optional: Write down a few vibes or themes Totally optional—but if you want to think ahead, jot down any of the following: * A theme (“redemption,” “lost royalty,” “chosen by fate”) * A class or race you’re considering * A relationship you want your character to have (family, lover, rival) * A tone (“tragic,” “funny,” “chaotic good himbo,” etc.) * Inspiration from media (Vox Machina, LOTR, Witcher, Critical Role) You do NOT need a full idea; keywords are more than enough. 5. Bring your imagination (and a positive attitude!) That's it! You don’t need a character sheet. You don’t need a build. You don’t need a backstory draft. You don’t need prep of any kind. Just show up, and I will take care of the rest.
What J. brings to the table
Here’s what you can expect from me: 1. A Personalized, Collaborative Coaching Session This isn’t a lecture—it’s a guided exploration. I ask questions, analyze your answers, and help you uncover the “why” behind your character. You speak, I listen deeply, and then we shape your answers into a cohesive story. 2. Expert Narrative Support I specialize in: * character motivation * emotional arcs * wounds and desires * personality dynamics * thematic alignment * story structure * world integration * relationships, secrets, and hooks My goal is to help you feel like you’re co-writing the opening chapter of your character’s novel. 3. A Comfortable, Judgment-Free Environment Whether you’re brand new or a veteran player, this is a space where: * no idea is too rough * no question is too simple * no concept is “wrong” * creativity and curiosity are encouraged My goal is to help you feel inspired, not intimidated. 4. A Focus on Story Over Rules This is not a tactical, rules-heavy session. I lean heavily into: * narrative logic * character development * emotional beats * world connection If you need help choosing mechanics that support your story, I’m happy to guide you—but this session is centered on character, not optimization. 5. Clear Communication & Warm Coaching Energy My style is: * collaborative * intuitive * emotionally aware * story-driven * patient * curiosity-first I help players understand not just who their character is, but why that matters. 6. Optional Voice & Tone Exploration If you want help finding: * your character’s voice * their conversational habits * quirks, mannerisms, and social tendencies * catchphrases or speaking style …I can guide you through experimenting until something “clicks” naturally. 7. A Written Deliverable Packet After the Session Every player receives: * A polished 1–2 paragraph (minimum) backstory * A character arc summary * A “DM Integration Packet,” including * campaign hooks * secrets * allies/enemies * roleplay cues * conversation starters * spotlight opportunities This ensures your character is easy for your DM to integrate and fun for you to play. 8. A Safe and Supportive Space I respect boundaries, lines/veils, and emotional safety. You are always in control of your character and their story.

How J. creates a safe table
I Follow Standard TTRPG Safety Tools I use: * X / N / O Cards (digital or verbal) * Lines & Veils * The Open Door Policy *Consent-based collaboration You may use these at any time, for any reason—no explanation needed. - Lines & Veils - Before we begin, and at anytime during our session, we'll have a brief Lines and Veils chat. You can set: * Topics you don’t want included (Lines) * Topics allowed only with fade-to-black (Veils) * Themes you enjoy * Anything you would like us to avoid completely This ensures our creative exploration stays in a space that feels good to you. - Check-Ins & "Session 0" - In the opening minutes of our session, I’ll do a quick “Session 0 Mini Check-In,” covering: * Your boundaries * Your comfort with emotional themes * The tone you want for your character * Any real-life sensitivities you want me to be mindful of * What level of depth you’re comfortable exploring You guide the tone. I adapt to you. - Active Safety During the Session - You are free to: * Pause the conversation at any time * Redact or change any detail * Switch topics * Ask to soften or skip a theme * Take a break * Redirect toward lighter or more playful content Your well-being comes first — the story comes second. - Aftercare & Closure - Because character coaching can sometimes stir up emotional energy (excitement, creativity, intensity, reflection), I include a few minutes of gentle aftercare at the end: * We review what felt good * We name anything that needs softening or revising * I help you “close the emotional loop” * You can request lighter or grounding conversation before we end * You decide what details stay in or out of your final written backstory This ensures you leave feeling inspired, steady, and energized — not raw or overwhelmed. - Your Story, Your Pace - I never push dark themes, trauma, or emotional intensity; YOU choose the tone, depth, and direction. I follow your lead and support your comfort at every turn. In short: This is a creative, collaborative, and emotionally safe space. You guide the boundaries, and I make sure your experience remains comfortable, respectful, and empowering.
