About the adventure

Deadlands with some House Rules. This is an introduction to both the setting and using the Foundry as our virtual tabletop. I have pre-made characters available and will allow players to change a few things on them prior to the game start. I will check all changes and may disallow them if they break my 'no min/max rules. Also, it just makes your character useful for one or two things, and that breaks the immersion for the rest of us. So come on out and wrestle a bucking bronco, or see if you're faster than the man in black.

About me

I've been a gamer since around 1976 and GM'ing since 77 or 78. I've run hundreds of gaming sessions and got into virtual gaming back when it was really hard to connect or play. I like action and adventure, but I also enjoy it when players spend the time to get to know the folks that they encounter. Pathfinder for Savage Worlds is my preferred fantasy ruleset. It's easy to learn and allows a lot of flexibility, while not boring everyone with tons of rules. I like the randomness of exploding dice rolls and cards for initiative, which brings some tension to combat. I'm retired and spend most of my time doing gaming-related stuff, be it printing miniatures or terrain, making maps for virtual games, or helping with gaming conventions (virtual and tabletop). I consider myself a pretty easy going GM, but I don't suffer fools, or folks who are rude to others or myself. I use the 'Golden Rule' I treat others as I like to be treated.

Character creation

Creating your character

For this session, there will be pre-made 'Archetype' characters available. I have a Google document with the information on it for the players.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

must be a Startplaying member. Must have a decent internet connection, a good microphone/headphone, and be able to use push-to-talk for voice communications if there is any background noise.

What GM Mark (that old guy GM) brings to the table

I'm going to cover character creation, skill and attribute rolls, moving around the virtual tabletop, and some combat examples. We'll mosey around Deadwood and meet some locals. I'm not a rules lawyer, but I have a pretty good understanding of both the setting and the Savage Worlds rules. There may be violence, drug use, prostitution, and other things you might encounter in the 1880s American West.

Homebrew rules

Some of my Savage Worlds rules that I use for every game; I will usually roll all Notice rolls. If I ask you to roll, you cannot spend a Benny for a re-roll. Spirit rolls cannot be re-rolled. You're only allowed one re-roll for anything. You can only spend a Benny once per play session or game day for Power Points. Reloading a firearm counts as an Action - so be aware of your ammunition!

How GM Mark (that old guy GM) creates a safe table

Golden Rule: treat others as you like to be treated. If anything is giving you problems, message me on Discord or say so in the game, and we'll pause and figure it out.
