About the adventure

Kingmaker is the legendary fantasy campaign you dreamed of playing the first time you picked up a fantasy RPG. For the first few levels, you'll survive ambushes, explore a wild land, and tame it. After level 4 and going all the way to level 20, you will rule a nation. From building settlements and negotiating trade to combating legendary monsters and uncovering deep conspiracies, you'll have to fight, negotiate, and explore to claim your throne and then keep it. But that's not all. You'll be doing real-world good, too. I'm keeping nothing from this game. Everything aside from Start Playing's booking fees will be going to Undue Medical Debt, a charity that buys medical debt and forgives it. Every dollar after Start Playing's fees will go straight into alleviating the medical debt of American families. You will receive a receipt for all donations proving that the money has indeed been sent. For every dollar so raised, about one hundred dollars in debt is erased from Americans in need. The Campaign: We'll be playing Kingmaker: 10th Anniversary Edition. In this campaign, you'll spend the first few levels as a rookie adventurer exploring the Stolen Lands, an untamed region of Golarion. By level 4, you will be charged with founding a new barony and eventually a new nation. Yet all the way to the heights of level 20, threats to your people will keep arising. You'll lead armies, delve dungeons, and build cities. Together, you must fight, explore, lead, make peace, make war, and rule. The Game: Everything will be run via a fully-loaded Foundry set-up. You need to purchase absolutely nothing. We'll use Discord for voice chat. Cameras will be entirely optional and will be used only with the consent of all players. Cost: $15 USD per session. I plan to make Session 0 free. Should you decide to pay more, I will proceed to donate it all proceeds beyond Start Playing's fees. Pathfinder 2e: No experience will be needed. I am quite experienced with the system and have brought many new players aboard it. Undue Medical Debt: This is my personal campaign. I will donate everything this campaign generates after Start Playing's fees to Undue Medical Debt and provide you a receipt to show you the donation was made. Every time you choose to play, your generosity will be lifting a burden from families in need. The GM: My name is Carlos Caro. I'm a physician whose been playing RPGs for about 35 years. Please feel free to see my profile for further information about me.

About me

Hello there! I'm Carlos, long-time player and GM of many systems, currently running quite a few games for old and new friends alike. I've been playing RPGs since the late 1980s - I've rolled THaC0, spent Force Points and Willpower, lost SAN, had clones killed by Friend Computer, shot up Night City, and so on. And I've GMed for other folks having all those experiences as well. I've decided to try a wild idea: can I use my extensive RPG experience as a form of service? I plan to provide high-quality games not to make a dime for myself, but to raise money for something dear to me. I want to provide you a great RPG experience - but I also want to give something back. Professionally, I am a veteran and a physician. I am not interested in monetizing my hobby. I plan to donate every dime past StartPlaying's fees to reputable groups doing good in the world. Every dollar after StartPlaying's fees will be given away. Every player will be sent receipts showing that their payments are being passed to good causes. For my first game, I plan to benefit Undue Medical Debt, a non-profit that purchases and forgives medical debts for families in need. For every dollar used this way, approximately $100 USD of medical debt is forgiven. I want you to have a great RPG experience. I want to lift a burden off families. See you at the table.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players are encouraged to read the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary Player's Guide beforehand, though the Kingdom and Warfare sections are not needed early. It can be downloaded for free from Paizo's website. https://downloads.paizo.com/Kingmaker+Players+Guide.pdf Character creation will follow standard Pathfinder 2e Remaster rules, with the following discussions during Session Zero: 1) Making a character suitable to the Kingmaker campaign. 2) Which 3rd party sources players may wish to use. 3) Working together to make a party. 4) We'll discuss the Exemplar if anyone would like to take that class. Animist, Guardian, Commander, and Kineticist are allowed. Canonically, Exemplars do not exist at the time the Kingmaker campaign is played. 5) Unholy sanctification is likely to be inappropriate unless all players sign up and want to make an evil campaign. I advise against this. BattleZoo ancestries have been pre-approved for play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should read the Kingmaker Player's Guide (10th Anniversary Edition) section on creating a player character beforehand. The Kingdoms and Warfare sections will not be needed for some time. Players should be ready to have a discussion on what they would each like to play. Foundry VTT via The Forge will be used. Players should have free accounts. They do not need to buy anything. Discord will be used for voice and possible visual chat, though visual chat will only be used with the consent of EVERY player. If you are not comfortable with being on camera, we will not use them. Players may be entirely new to Pathfinder. I will help you make the character you want.

What Carlos brings to the table

You won't be some murderhobo wandering the land without consequences - you'll be the real leaders the people will look to when rival kings, wicked monsters, disease, and mysterious curses threaten them. You'll carve your nation out of the Stolen Lands and defend it as an epic hero. When it ends, it'll be your people and your nation that you will have fought for in your version of this story. You'll be treated to the gorgeous Kingmaker 10th Anniversary Foundry VTT in its full glory. They did an amazing job with this one. I will also discuss with you if you want music or just ambient sounds (already included) to fit the game, using in-table tools so you have nothing further to download. I've added modules for convenience, ambience, and ease-of-play. Your only obligation is to provide me with art for your character and optionally a token for them. If you have art for them but no token, that's fine and will be taken care of before we begin. I do not view tactical combat and high role-playing as in conflict. You're getting both. Pathfinder 2e veterans already know it has approachable but intricate combat that rewards quick thinking and teamwork. Yet it still gives you the ability to create quirky, interesting, classic, and neat character options all while keeping it's rules clean and clear. I'll be asking for feedback on challenges frequently, making sure players are finding the difficulty level they enjoy. Generally, I run Rules-as-Intended with allowance for "this is cool." My usual approach to a rules dispute is to give you about thirty seconds to convince me, then make the best decision I can while willing to review it later. I assume players act in good faith until they prove to me they're not. I don't pretend to be some great voice actor, but I'll happily play the fool and do my best if it heightens my players' amusement.

Homebrew rules

During Session Zero, we will discuss the house rules which players will decide if they want to use for the campaign. These are common house rules known to Pathfinder veterans: 1) Free archetype? 2) Gradual Ability Boosts? 3) Proficiency Without Level? BattleZoo ancestries have been pre-approved. Additionally, a few choices have to be made for the campaign: 1) Kingdom in Background? 2) Skirmish (Pathfinder: Battlecry!) vs Warfare

Safety

How Carlos creates a safe table

Let me start with this: if you're going to hate anyone, bully anyone, or use a slur, kindly move on. My games are welcoming to anyone who is willing to welcome all others. Everyone is welcome as long as they are willing to welcome others in turn. My games are no place to show hatred or bigotry. No matter your religion, orientation, identity, color, ethnicity, national origin, occupation, disability, political leanings, age, gender, biological sex, or any other factor of your identity, you are welcome as long as you, too, welcome others. I've installed mods for your classic X-cards and similar safety tools into Foundry. Additionally, we'll discuss the content of the Kingmaker campaign and draw lines and veils during session zero. If something is a problem for you, I want you to feel empowered to speak up.
