About the adventure

Have you ever played through the module Lost Mines of Phandelver [LMoP]? It was published in 2014 but people still talk about it all the time. I can show you what all the fuss is about. It's a wonderful introduction to the Forgotten Realms setting and the creatures and factions that exist in it. If the group would like to continue playing with their characters in this setting we will move on to the Dragon of Icespire Peak [DoIP] adventure book. Whenever we complete a book of content I will present options to the group for where we go next. There's dungeons and dragons in these adventures! I'll be running 4 hour sessions every week as long as at least 3 players are present.

About me

I have a little more than 10 years of experience as a game master! According to Roll20 I have spent over 5,000 Hours running games, building maps, assigning stats to tokens, working on stat sheets, and doing prep work. ~My games are always LGBTQ+ friendly :) ~I run DnD 5E, Pathfinder 1E, and sometimes DnD 3.5E. I've played in games in several other systems. I also run games for my friends in a system and setting I have lovingly built and updated for the better part of a decade. ~For my games, I like to make maps using Wonderdraft and Dungeondraft, NPC/ tokens using Heroforge and 2-Minute Tabletop, and any other visual aids we need using Krita. I will also make World Anvil articles to help my players immerse themselves in the setting. ~I use plenty of tone-setting music in the background [which my players are always free to mute]. ~As a GM I pride myself on being thoroughly prepared for as many directions as the players want to go in. I prepare for every session with loads of maps, notes, visual aids, NPC/Monster statistics, and other materials and research whenever necessary. But if my players want to do something I'm not prepared for I still have plenty of experience with improv to keep us going. ~Dice, numbers, and mechanics are fun. I try my best to have an exhaustive understanding of the rules of the system we are playing, with the books nearby for easy reference. But when we're playing TTRPGs we're here to roleplay. I try to maintain an immersive atmosphere for all my games and the mechanics exist to serve the roleplaying experience. ~I'm not new to game design. Before I was ever exposed to the internet or TTRPGs I started building a game system that I've lovingly labored over for at least 11 years, with thousands of pages of google docs, spreadsheets, and other documents for it. ~I'm not new to world building either. I got into game design because I was a huge fantasy novel nerd with a deep love for all things mystical and whimsical. I made multiple games to play through events in my own high fantasy setting. I've been running campaigns in this setting for my friends pretty consistently every week for about 8 years, maybe longer.

Character creation

Creating your character

~We'll be using standard array and creating level 1 characters for this adventure using the Roll20 character sheets or sheets in google drive. If you need help I will hold your hand all the way across the street :) ~We will be using 5E, 2014 rules. You can use the 2014 Player's Handbook, Tasha's Cauldron, Xanathar's Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Van Richten's Guide, and most other published 5E materials. If you're desperate for a homebrew class you can send me one to review and if I think it's sufficiently balanced I will put it to a private vote for the table. If the table does not unanimously approve your homebrew class then you'll have to run something else.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need the following: ~A microphone and internet access ~A discord account [for voice and text chat] ~A Roll20 account ~(Optional) A google account for google drive access

What Rain brings to the table

We will use Roll20, have dynamic lighting, custom maps, and tokens. Players are free to explore creative and diplomatic solutions to encounters and quests while still earning the full EXP reward. I don't punish players for acquiring allies or pets. Unless a monster/creature has a swarm stat block I will always roll for every monster. That is the only way to be fair to the players and I have found it to be the most immersive option [some goblins miss, some hit v.s. ALL twenty goblins hit you or miss you]. I prepare for the party going off script! Want to befriend the evil goblin tribe? Swear allegiance to the dragon cult? Go ahead! No skin off my teeth, I've been there and done that. Consent is key! As a group you will need to decide if you want the experience of playing as heroes, villains, or something in between.

Safety

How Rain creates a safe table

~We will have a session zero during which we go over the content of the adventure books (violence, betrayal, kidnapping, etc) that might be objectionable and how much or little of that I can reasonably remove or change. I will state where my boundaries and expectations are for players and then we'll go over Monte Cook's content checklist. ~I schedule a 10-minute break for the middle of the session but my players are always welcome to step back and take a break from the game whenever they need to for any reason at all. ~My discord DMs are always open for players that need to talk. I am not available 24/7 but I will get back to you whenever I have time. You can also message me during session if something is happening in game that you would prefer not to happen, or if me or another player is making you uncomfortable. If it's not something I can easily fix on the fly we'll take a break while I try to resolve things. ~After session I will stick around for a little bit in case players want to talk about what happened in game, what they liked or didn't like in the session, and otherwise reflect on the game experience as we go.
