About the adventure

A B O U T This is a homebrew game for role players who like twists, turns, and creating characters with the DM that will add to those twists! Player characters going into this story will have a major secret that will come to light at the end of Session 1, so you'll be creating your characters with that secret in mind. ================== S T O R Y You begin in the "mundane" world separated by a strange magical wall made of black thorns that seems to go on to the ends of the earth. It is said generations before that your people came from a land on the other side of the wall where magic thrives, but with a giant wall blocking the two lands, the only solution is that those lands are dangerous. To make matters worse, strange rifts have been starting to tear open in the wall that have been letting out monsters on the land. You as the player are part of a team that hunts these creatures. Months ago, a rift opened, but this time instead of a monster that came through, the people were met with an ambassador from the other side. What does this all mean for the land of the "mundane" and the people who reside in it? This is where your story starts. ================== N O T E This is a SFW, 5e friendly game, for busy and/or casual adult players with a focus more on an original world with fun characters.... who may be dealing with some dark political fantasy issues. Oh, and monsters, can't forget about those. Expect a story that will bring up topics of identity, national loyalty, disease, and (most of all) redemption and character growth. Will your party take the quirky path through the story? Or a bit more serious one? Either way, prepare for an original journey through two worlds where magic is dangerous to everything it touches.

About me

Hello! I'm Alexandra but please feel free to call me Alex or Fay (part of my normal username online). I'm a 30s cat mom and professional artist who LOVES telling stories. I've been hosing and writing in collaborative writing and role playing spaces online for nearly 18 years. I've been DMing specifically for just over 5 years now. My goal in my games is for players to have low bar entry games and to just have fun. I care more about an interwoven story and "the rule of cool" than stricter games. Homebrew is my friend! I keep my games rather clean, preferably focusing on action and dark mysteries and keeping NSFW and sexual topics out of arms reach. I actually am a rare DM where I'm open to hosting family games! My story topics can range all across the board in the speculative fiction genre. I prefer dark mysteries, world building lore drops, and plenty of shenanigans. Actually, that's what my players love the most! I keep plenty of quirky shenanigans and comic relief moments handy to balance out other character moments.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will make characters prior to Session 1. I want you to have some fun with creating your character, so homebrew is completely acceptable and even encouraged. Since the focus is more along the lines of roleplay with occasional combat (more of a 60/40 ish), I'm more interested in interesting characters. We can fix any "broken" combat stuff later on, so please be aware! We're all adults here :) Stats can be rolled and we will be playing on roll20, so characters can be created in there or added via dndbeyond if you know how to attach them. The main thing is that this is NOT a mature rated story. I am open for characters to have complicated pasts and/or romantic interests, but anything mature will be "faded to black". Please keep this in mind when creating your characters. Lastly, I will ask players as backgrounds are being built if they want "a peek behind the DM screen", meaning if you want to purposely plan with me certain story beats. Improv is encouraged just as much as planning, so let's work together to make your character shine with the others in the party! If you have any major questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

The current party

You all will be acquainted with each other at the beginning of the game. Part of a larger team/group that handles magic disruptions that come into the area in the form of rifts. You can be volunteers, working off a parole, etc. This will be part of your character creation.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

After approved, we will be using Discord for OOC, voice chat, and for campaign notes with roll20 for the actual game. I am open to AI pictures and love pinterest collections of characters, so feel free to make any of those while we are setting up the campaign (or throughout). If you would prefer to work with me to draw your characters (as this is a paid game) please chat with me beforehand!

What Alex Garcia brings to the table

My table is meant to be place where adults can have a fun story but without the pressure of it being mature or crude (I'm the rare adult that doesn't swear while she plays LOL). It doesn't mean that the story won't be intense or deal with some hard topics. This is why I embrace the "Rule of Cool" with my games. So make us laugh! Enjoy dramatic moments! Be a little silly! Cuz you'll need that comic relief between some story beats. I also provide a collaborative story environment that I encourage you to participate in! Let's let all of us build this world together and create a party that you get to root for. Lastly, since this would be a paid game, and I am a professional illustrator outside of this, I will also be taking more time to create more original pictures, maps, and other special things to go with the story.

Homebrew rules

We can all decide on some bonus action or crit rules later on. My main table rules are that everyone gets a free re-roll every game, and you can gain a team re-roll that can be passed around if someone successfully gives a recap and takes notes of last session. We will be using a mix of theater of the mind with maps and other images to fill out the scenes we are playing in. I also like to say is that if you don't want the DM to remember something, don't remind her >:)

How Alex Garcia creates a safe table

Every player is to fill out a sheet of information about their limits or "lines and veils" at the character creation phase. This then will be kept on record for me, and available for others to view on the discord (with permission of course). Every person will also get their own specific channel in the discord called "coffee with the DM" where they can directly chat with me about anything. Please use this as well as a place if you want to quietly confront something live. If ANYTHING comes up that makes you feel uncomfortable, please let me know. I am also willing to play HR if needed in situations.
