About the adventure

The Shadowborne Organization dispatches your team to a secluded frontier village where something has gone terribly wrong. During the town’s ancient occult festival, a child vanished into a deathly cold fog that swept through the streets. Two weeks later, the fog returned — and every remaining child disappeared with it. Now the village sits half-silent, half-mad with grief, terrified to speak above a whisper once night falls. Your assignment is simple on paper: investigate the disappearances, follow any trace the fog left behind, and recover the lost children. But the village offers only contradictions and dread. Homes stand abandoned mid-meal, frost clings to windows even in warm weather, and survivors insist the fog felt… aware. Some swear they heard footsteps behind them. Others claim they saw the silhouettes of children walking willingly into the mist. Shadowborne’s concern is clear — a phenomenon strong enough to abduct an entire generation is no ordinary haunting. Something ancient is stirring, something tied to forgotten rites and the strange sigils carved on stones around the village perimeter. Whatever force is behind this is growing bold, and every night the air grows colder. Your investigation begins at the edge of the mystery, where fear and superstition choke the truth. Somewhere in this dying village lies the path to the children — and a doorway leading far beyond the world you know. What waits on the other side is unknown… but the fog is coming again. And this time, it may not let you stay behind.

About me

Hey, I'm Jake. Published author, certified book coach, and a GM for nearly three decades. I write horror, fantasy, and scifi for a living, and I love to run games in those genres as well. I prefer a balance of RP and combat. And I believe above all, entertainment is the most import part of these games. If everyone has fun, that's all that matters.

Character creation

Creating your character

Session zero Players will create their characters at level 1, using one of three D&D4e standard arrays. Players Handbook 1, 2, and 3 are all available to be used. No D&D Essentials classes (so nothing from a book starting with the word Heroes). The only playable race off the table is the Pixie. I'll have the 4e data in Fantasy Grounds available.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need to join my Discord server, so you need a Discord account. You'll need the Fantasy Grounds Unity program (which is now free to play). You can get that from Steam or Fantasy Grounds' site.

What Jake A. Strife brings to the table

I will provide the rulees in Fantasy Grounds. Since this is D&D4e tactical combat will be more prevalent. I will mostly stick to the rules as written... but if something is too cool to pass up we'll embrace the Rule of Cool.

Homebrew rules

This is Curse of Strahd, but in D&D4e. So the monsters will be homebrewed, reskinned, and restatted to fit fourth edition.

Safety

How Jake A. Strife creates a safe table

In session zero we'll go over the horror aspect of Curse of Strahd for any who haven't played it. If players want to stick around to decompress after the session, they can.
