About the adventure

OVERVIEW: A watchtower has fallen silent. Its guardians are missing. Some say it’s the work of the giants who roam the frigid lands to the north. Others claim it’s the barbarian tribes amassing for an invasion. Some even claim it’s the work of darker forces scheming in the shadows to sow chaos across the lands. The only thing people know for sure is that the kingdom is in danger. From what? That answer lies across the wild tundra, hidden deep beneath that cold and silent fortress of stone. Will you brave the unknown? Will you seek answers where others dare not tread? The watchtower is waiting. WHAT TO EXPECT: You'll start as 3rd level characters traveling north to investigate a military watchtower that has ceased responding to messages. The campaign is comprised of a series of encounters broken up by travel, with several dungeon crawls spread in. There will be ample room for roleplay, exploration, and combat. Maps will be shown and traversed using Foundry VTT. You can utilize Foundry's built in dice roller or use your own dice at home, whatever you prefer. The campaign can last anywhere from 4-12 months depending on how fast you complete the content within it and how long each session goes. Some play groups prefer shorter sessions (2-4 hours) while others prefer longer ones (5-6+). We'll do a session zero to establish characters, bonds, relationships, and set expectations on what kind of game we want to play.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will occur during Session 0. Players are free to create their characters prior to that, but expect that character creation and an overview of the adventure and campaign will occur during that first session. Characters will start at 3rd level. We will be using the Point Buy method to determine stats (unless the entire group wishes to use another method, then by all means we can). This campaign uses the 2014 version of the D&D 5e ruleset, however, characters created using the 2024 version are welcome as well. I can be flexible to accommodate the needs and wants of the group.

The current party

I will have several pre-generated characters ready for you to choose from, should you prefer that to creating one from scratch, however, the final party composition will be up to you, the players.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need access to a computer with an internet browser installed, a microphone, and headphones. If you wish to roll your own dice you'll need those too. You'll also want Discord installed on your computer or your phone as that is how we'll enable voice chat and communicate.

What Benjamin brings to the table

I enjoy using ambient music, making up voices for characters, and always go with the Rule of Cool. I will very rarely tell you that you cannot do something, although I will make sure you know the potential in-game consequences of a given action if they would be apparent to your character. In the end though, we're all here to have fun and tell a story.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action, as it always should have been (one of many things they fixed in the 2024 rules). Critical hits you can choose to roll your dice once and double them or roll twice as many dice. I use a modified version of flanking. Instead of advantage, you get a bonus d4 to your attack roll.

Safety

How Benjamin creates a safe table

Session 0 is where you can let me know what your hard no's are in regards to certain aspects of games (certain monsters, visuals, situations, etc.) that you'd like me to avoid. If something comes up during play that you're not comfortable with, we can cut to black or, if it's something that must be resolved for story or combat purposes, we'll work to find a resolution that you are comfortable with.
