About the adventure
In the darkness, your nose catches a foul smell and then you hear the rough sounds of Orcs nearby. They stop and shuffle around as though searching for something. Hoping its not you, you quietly rouse your friends from their sleep and start to move whilst staying in the shadows. 🟡 These adventures are int e gap of time between the “The Hobbit” and the “Lord of the Rings”, so it doesn’t impact the beloved stories. 🟡 You’ll start by exploring in the lands of Eriador where the Hobbits Shire and Bree live. 🟡 Your party will choose a famous Patron, that could be Bilbo or Gandalf to name drop two of them. They’ll ask you to find books containing lore for their research or other objects that they need. 🟡 You’ll find the free peoples of Middle-earth getting on with their daily lives, whilst the creeping Shadow sets its teeth in the land. 🟡 Every step, every choice and every fight will test your courage as you move through this epic tale of discovery, danger, and heroism. 🟡 There will be longer adventures that will be presented to the party and you may even travel further than the lonely mountain. The game uses the core D&D 5e system and gives all the flavour of the Middle-Earth. It is a great way for those who would like to experience a more role-play oriented system. Character creation will be in D&DBeyond and has its own classes and species -Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, several subsets of Mankind that you you’ll know and love. About me
I’ve loved the escapism that TTRPGs give us from the first time I playing D&D as a child. Since then the many systems I’ve played in and GM’d all have their own fun way about them. I’ve found the more roleplay in the game generally the more fun it is. I feel its the depth that it gives to the game. My online GMing really started in 2020 as my daughter started her A levels, which are UK exams and she has now finishing her degree. A very proud Dad here. This game grew from one into many and some of those players still at the table 4 or more years later. I feel they’d say that I’m a fan of you the player and love to see the party succeed. That’s not because the adventure was easy, but because you triumphed against the odds. Feel free to call me Japes (jay-ps), which I’m known by IRL as well. Its a sort of hybrid of my given name ‘Jean-Paul’, which can also be used, but not with a bad French accent. The word Jape is an old English word for joke or prank and still sometimes still gets used. My drier sense of humour seems to fit the name, least ways so I'm told 😉. My games are open to everyone, all I ask is that you treat others with mutual respect, so we can focus on having an amazing time. Bring your creativity to the table and embrace your dream character – whether that’s a Call of Cthulhu a 1920’s black female FBI agent or something made from Sapient Pearwood in Discworld or a D&D Fairy Barbarian. Creating your character
You’ll create your character on D&D Beyond with the Free Leagues options. 🟡 In Session 0 we’ll discuss how your character fits into the world and walk through the options you can choose. All species, classes etc are specific to the adventure setting and will help you feel the difference in the style of game. 🟡 Characters will start at 1st Level and can progress to 10th level. Progress is xp based and utilises non-combat methods. 🟡 A colourful backstory is a requirement here as many aspects of this will be encountered. I use a Google form for this as it helps guide you on things that may not seem important… but could be. 🟡 The all important ability rolls will be at the game table and use random 4d6 dropping the lowest. Should the total points be low I will allow a re-roll. 🟡 Basic starting equipment and you’ll find some magical items in game.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Make sure you have: 🟡 A reliable PC, with a stable internet connection 🟡 A working headset or microphone and headphones. This helps prevent VC feedback. 🟡 Free accounts for Discord, D&D Beyond and ForgeVTT (hosts FoundryVTT). Links will be supplied. 🟡 We'll be 'camera on' as this allows us to see the role play between you and the other players. It is closer to that "round the table" game feel.
What Japes brings to the table
🟡 New Player friendly. Be that first time to role playing game in general or Lord of the Rings. I’ll be here to guide but you’ll always be at the helm of your character. 🟡 Role play and being in character during the game. This doesn’t need to be at a Critical Role level. I’ll bring some voices to the table and love it when players do too. 🟡 Crafted maps. 🟡 Great gaming style music 🟡FoundryVTT expertise 🟡 We'll bring the story to life as the adventure unfolds before you.. 🟡 A sprinkle of dry humour that adds a unique flavour 🟡 I embrace inclusivity for all players at the table. Rarely do I see ‘ism’ problems at the table and if it does arise, I’ll deal with it quickly. 🟡 We’ll have a break for 5 to 10 mins half way through the session. Time to top up drinks and snacks.

🟡 Before joining you'll have let me know your preferences for the Lines & Veils via a Google form. This allows me to collate them alland present as a “package deal”. I’ll expect everyone to honour them. 🟡 During the game there are easy to use XNO cards within FoundryVTT. 🟡 Above all else, prepare to role-play, have a lot of laughs and fun.
