About the adventure

Whispers of Madness is a dark-fantasy D&D 5E campaign set on the mist-covered island of Kul’Rayne, where ancient wards weaken and a sleeping god stirs beneath reality. Players will explore haunted ruins, lost settlements, and eerie catacombs as they unravel the mystery of the Veil — the fragile boundary between the mortal world and something far older. Your characters aren’t just adventurers; they’re the keys to a prophecy long in motion. Each of you was drawn to Kul’Rayne for a reason, whether by dream, letter, or fate itself. As you delve deeper into the island’s secrets, you’ll uncover connections between your pasts and the creeping influence of an old god, whose whispers infect both the living and the land. Expect cinematic storytelling, immersive narration, and choices that carry real emotional weight. The campaign blends eldritch horror with moments of beauty and hope — where sanity, morality, and reality are all tested. This game is perfect for players who enjoy rich character development, mysterious lore, and story-driven exploration with a touch of cosmic dread. Whether you’re a veteran role-player or a newcomer seeking an unforgettable narrative, the mists of Kul’Rayne are calling.

About me

I’m a Dungeon Master with over three years of experience running immersive, narrative-driven campaigns that balance atmospheric storytelling, character-driven plots, and cinematic combat. My style blends dark fantasy, mystery, and exploration, often inspired by worlds like Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Lovecraftian horror. As a DM, I focus on deep story-telling and emotional stakes — I love weaving backstories into the larger world so that every choice feels meaningful. My sessions tend to feature: Deep worldbuilding with ancient mysteries and hidden lore Dynamic, cinematic encounters that evolve beyond combat Personal storytelling that ties character arcs to the campaign’s central themes Immersive pacing and tone, often with custom visuals, soundtracks, and narration I’ve run both long-form campaigns (20+ sessions) and one-shots for groups of all experience levels. Whether you’re here for grim storytelling, collaborative roleplay, or just epic monster fights, I aim to make every session memorable — and a little unsettling in the best way.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players are welcome to create their own characters using official D&D 5E (2014 and 2024 hybrid) source material. Homebrew options may be considered on a case-by-case basis if they align with the tone of the campaign. Please create characters with depth, motivation, and purpose — individuals who feel like they belong in a dark, mysterious world full of secrets and consequence. While humor will naturally find its place at the table, no meme characters or intentionally chaotic “joke” builds will be accepted. This story thrives on atmosphere, tension, and player-driven emotion; characters designed purely for comedic disruption or derailing progression will not fit the tone of Whispers of Madness. Once your character is approved, the DM will craft a recent backstory segment — spanning roughly one week to one month — that explains how your character arrived on the island of Kul’Rayne and what led them to become entangled in its mysteries. This ensures every player begins with a strong narrative hook and a personal connection to the unfolding story.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Character creation within DnD Beyond is highly preferred so that your character can be added to the Campaign module that I have created.

What Scott brings to the table

As your DM, I aim to create a cinematic and immersive experience where the story feels alive and every choice matters. I use character voices, ambient music, and sound design to bring scenes to life — from tense moments in the dark to emotional, character-driven dialogue. I am always looking for new ways to push myself in what I'm able to provide for my players and their immersion. I embrace the Rule of Cool for nearly any situation. If your idea fits the moment and feels epic, we’ll find a way to make it work. While I respect the core rules of D&D 5E, creativity, teamwork, and storytelling will always take priority over strict mechanics. Combat ranges from light, cinematic encounters to intense, high-stakes battles, depending on how the party chooses to approach situations. Every session blends atmospheric storytelling, meaningful choices, and just the right touch of horror to keep players on the edge of their seat. Whether you’re here for the drama, the danger, or the deep storytelling, you’ll find that Whispers of Madness rewards curiosity, courage, and clever thinking.

Homebrew rules

Nothing too crazy here - Potion is bonus action. Nat 20s in combat choose double dice or double damage. Anything else can be discussed in Session 0 or ongoing as they come up within the game.

Safety

How Scott creates a safe table

Your comfort and enjoyment at the table are my top priorities. Whispers of Madness explores themes of mystery, horror, and the supernatural, but all content stays within a PG-13 rating. While there may be moments of tension, violence, or unsettling imagery, nothing in this campaign is designed to shock, humiliate, or deeply disturb players. I never include taboo, explicitly sexual, or extremely graphic content in my games. The focus is always on atmosphere, story, and character-driven emotion rather than gore or exploitation. The horror in Whispers of Madness is psychological and narrative in nature — it aims to unsettle the mind, not cross personal boundaries. At my table, every player’s voice matters. Together, we build a world that feels dark and dangerous, but always safe to explore.
