About the adventure

Life is hard for an adventurer, especially when you haven't made your name. You sit on the porch of the Hawksmoth Inn, brooding over your dwindling coin. The bright cheeriness of the morning seems to mock your troubled circumstances when salvation comes from an unexpected source. A recent earthquake exposed a lost tomb in the mountains, promising gold and glory aplenty--So long as you can survive the undead within. Welcome, Adventurers! If you're new to D&D or returning to the hobby after a long absence, this is the perfect place to start. This original adventure features all the elements of classic D&D: - Powerful magic items - Secret passages - Sinister traps - Tantalizing treasure - And, of course, ancient undead In this single-session adventure, we'll focus on learning to play using the new 5th edition 2024 ruleset. You'll explore a long-forgotten tomb while learning the game through actual play. This approach makes learning fun and easy, while diminishing the anxiety that sometimes accompanies trying new hobbies. Everyone at this table is new, making it a safe space to learn, find D&D friends, and kick-start your entry into the hobby.

About me

**NOTE**: If you aren't seeing a campaign or one-shot you'd like to join at a time you're available, message me about a custom adventure. I'm flexible on scheduling and happy to run most modules or home-brew games. I love storytelling! IRL, I'm a professional ghostwriter and a forever DM, running several multi-year campaigns. I've been playing D&D since the 90s and DMing 5e since 2015. So if you are looking for a game where we blend thrilling combat, compelling social encounters, and worldbuilding exploration to create captivating, collaborative stories, this is the table for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Pre-made characters are provided for this adventure. We'll use D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com) to claim and play with your character sheet. This allows both you and me to access your sheet, making it easy to answer questions while keeping the game moving forward. You'll need a free account on D&D Beyond to access your pre-made character. However, you won't have to purchase anything on the site to play. D&D Beyond might be an unfamiliar platform for you. No worries! I'll do an orientation for everyone during the session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

For this adventure, you'll need the following: - Discord account - D&D Beyond account - A microphone or headset suitable for use on Discord (your phone can work for this if you have a quiet area to play) - A computer, laptop, tablet, or a combination of these capable of running both Discord and D&D Beyond simultaneously. We'll use the Discord app (downloadable on discord.com) to talk during the sessions. Once you secure your spot in the game, you'll receive the link to join my Discord server, where we'll talk and message before, during, and after the session. We'll use D&D Beyond Maps for our virtual tabletop (VTT). This allows me to share maps, tokens, and other visual aids with you as we play. Again, I'll teach everyone how to use it during the session. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions as you prepare for the session.

What RJ Currer brings to the table

- D&D Beyond Maps as the VTT - Discord channel for gameplay - A fun, dynamic, adaptive DM-style - Collaborative atmosphere - Intense in-game challenges - A strong, evocative narrative style - Thematic background music - 30 years of experience with D&D - A decade of experience running D&D 5e games - Character voices (I mean, I'm no voice actor, but I do my best.)

Homebrew rules

While I'm primarily a rules-as-written Dungeon Master, especially since this is a learn-to-play game. However, feel free to get creative! Within the rules, there is a lot of room for out-of-the-box thinking and unique gameplay.

Safety

How RJ Currer creates a safe table

D&D should always be a fun, safe, welcoming environment for everyone. As such, I'll start our session with a brief orientation ( called a mini-session zero). During this mini-session zero, I'll facilitate introductions, go over the table code of conduct, and introduce you to the safety tools used during the game. The purpose of this orientation is to set expectations, address any questions, and ensure everyone feels comfortable before we begin. Below, you'll notice there are content warnings. This are general warnings about this adventure, but very little of this is non-negotiable. If you have questions or concerns about any of these warnings, feel free to reach out before signing up. I'm more than happy to provide more information about content and what can be altered for your session.
