About the adventure

Explore a cult-ridden village, race to save the life of an innocent blacksmith, and take down the cult's leaders! In this 2 to 3 session adventure that's perfect for new players, you'll play second-level characters tasked with stopping a wrongful execution in the bleak and distant town of Bleakwash. Is it mere malice that drives these villagers to such heartless cruelty, or are darker forces at play in Bleakwash? This adventure has an 50-50 combat to roleplay balance, with a little dungeon crawl for good measure. Note: A free session-0 is provided, and then the adventure is 2-3 sessions long, for a total of 3-4 sessions. While the adventure is listed under the horror tag, horror elements are light in this game.

About me

Well met, adventurers! You can call me Nick, and I've a vault of wonders and peril ready to test your wits and mettle... I'm a veteran dungeon master with over 100 sessions under my belt. My style is 50% improv, 50% prep, and I love cheering on my players as they attempt death-defying stunts and tear-jerking roleplay alike! I'm the DM for the online actual plays the Guild of Icons (D&D5e, 13th Age), Mobius Command (Savage Worlds), UPLIFT (High Magic Lowlives), and Nordmark (D&D5e), and I bring the same chaotic energy to my games. You can also expect custom maps, interesting situations, fun NPCs, and bosses that break the rules (in cool ways!) I'm getting into paid GMing because I have more ideas than I have the time to stream, and I'm eager to share them with more and more people. The best way to hone your skills is to play with people you've never played with before, and I can't wait to do just that! I think that no story survives encountering the players, so I prepare situations, not plots. You won't feel rail-roaded into a specific outcome with me, and if you suddenly decide to open a flower store, I'll be improvising customers on the fly right with you. Safety is important to me, and we'll establish what content is and isn't acceptable before the first session, as well as the safety tools available to you mid-game. I can't wait to run a game for you and your friends, adventure awaits!

Character creation

Creating your character

I am happy to walk you through character creation during session 0. However, if you're eager to get started beforehand, please read the following: If you have a character already made, please send it to me before session 0, so I can look through it and see if there are any problems. We will use Standard Array to work out ability scores, and the 2024 D&D rules. You will need to create a second-level character. Multiclassing is permitted. For sources, the following D&D books are fine: 2024 Player's Handbook, Mordenkainan Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, The Book of Many Things, and Bigby's Glory of the Giants. As we are using 2024 rules, please note that anything in the 2024 Player's Handbook that overrides an older book should be taken. This means your ability score improvements will come from your background instead of your species, and your subclass features will arrive according to the class' description in the 2024 Player's Handbook. For character options outside of that list, I will work on a case-by-case basis with you. I don't guarantee it'll make it to the game, but I don't guarantee it won't either. Don't worry about making expansive backstories for your characters.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a microphone. A webcam is encouraged, but optional. We will talk on discord, so install Discord on your computer. You don't need an account on owlbear, but you will need to be using a modern web browser (chrome, firefox, edge, etc). You can store your sheet how you like (such as with D&D Beyond), but I will want a PDF of your character sheet that I can check over. The easiest way to do that is to use the official D&D character sheet PDF and edit it, but you can also export PDF character sheets from D&D Beyond. Owlbear has a dice roller if you need one, but physical dice are fine, too.

What Nick (HisCursedness) brings to the table

I run games on Owlbear.rodeo, a free and easy-to-use virtual tabletop tool. I provide custom maps, ambient music, and do character voices. It's up to you to bring art for your characters, but I have some default tokens we can use if you can't find any. My combat encounters are intense and varied. I reward mid-combat improvisation and good use of terrain, which my enemies will also do! Out of combat, I do character voices, but sometimes slip my accents. My NPCs always want something, and are almost always conflicted in some way. My DMing style embraces Rule of Cool, while still sticking to the Rules as Written for as long as they make sense. I have a long history of introducing new players to the hobby and teaching them the rules. Many of those players came away confident enough to start DMing for themselves!

Homebrew rules

We will play with 2024 D&D rules as written, but we tend not to worry about encumbrance in the day-to-day until you try to carry a big statue home by yourself!

Safety

How Nick (HisCursedness) creates a safe table

During Session 0 we'll go over unacceptable content in the game and what areas we must tread carefully. During a game, if anybody feels uncomfortable, they can immediately pause the game. We will all take a break while I discuss with them what content was problematic and how best to remove their discomfort, before rejoining the game.
