About the adventure

Learn to play the Fabula Ultima JRPG style system in the campaign "Who Needs Heroes?"! Free Session 0 & 1 Light-Hearted beginner friendly campaign with more focus on the characters and narrative collaboration to build out the world together. Easy JRPG Turn-Based Combat – learn your opponents weaknesses to bring them down and work together to form powerful combinations. Forge Bonds between characters and NPCs, gain allies or make rivals to gain powerful bonuses. Each session will build on the previous, slowly growing the complexity of the narrative as well as the mechanics as they organically arrive through play. Welcome to your next adventure! After tragically and/or dramatically expiring in your previous life, you have awoken in a strange new world with others who appear to be in the same situation as yourself. Your clothes are different, your hair feels... wrong, your body feels strange and there's something else you can't quite put your finger on. Wait... do you even have fingers? Is that a claw? Are those wings? And that person has horns! I don't think you are in Kansas anymore... If you enjoy JRPGs like Final Fantasy or the Persona series; have a penchant for Isekai Anime such as Moonlit Fantasy, Jobless Reincarnation, or Grimgar; or are just looking for a new system to delve into without the stress of needing to know every detail right away, then you might find a good fit here. New players preferred, though all skill levels are welcome.

About me

Hey there! Welcome to the Laughing Goat Tavern, I'm the barkeep and owner, Sylus - or at least that is the name I have adopted over the years. My real name has been lost to time. I have been the owner of this fine establishment for nearly 20 years and the stories I have collected in those years are too vast to recount here. My more frequent patrons tell me I should offer my stories and tales to a wider audience, so I have decided to join in this lovely guild of storytellers in the hopes of providing good times to those who seek it. I am well versed in many genres be it Action, Comedy, Mischief, Historical, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romance, the odd Political Intrigue tale, and even Horror from time to time. I wouldn't say I have a particular fondness for any one type of tale, but my skills sway heavier towards lower fantasy, realism where survival is the key piece - stories that revolve around the lesser known heroes often not acknowledged. Heroes chosen by Gods are always good fun, but I find more enjoyment in giving praise to the group of citizens who rally against a goblin hoard or the local youths who banded together against a corrupt official - anyone who sets out to make a difference deserves to be recognized, no matter how small it may seem. My preferred vessel of telling these tales is through Foundry VTT/Discord using Fabula Ultima or a lighter version of 5e. So, if it takes your fancy, why not drop by sometime? I am sure you could bring a tale or two yourself.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation in FU is a lot less complex than most other TTRPGs - We will be going over all of this on Session 0 and character creation will be held during that time - You will not need to purchase anything for this as in Foundry VTT I will have everything easily accessible. All you will need to worry about is being on time. :) Should you desire to look into the game before hand, then the Core Rulebook will be all you need - We will have the option to use some extra elements from other official publications for the system later in the campaign, but they are not required and will be fully available within Foundry.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

In order to play, the only thing you will need is access to Discord - I will have my own server designed for this campaign. You will receive an email with the invite link. Foundry hosting will also be handled by me and will only require internet browser access to connect via a link to the session, which will be posted in the discord when the game is ready.

What Sylus brings to the table

The discord server will be special tailored to the campaign, providing quick access for information about the campaign, notes, lore, characters, and past events - any information learned will also be present within. The Foundry VTT will be used for battles and backdrops - set in a classic JRPG tile sideview isometric grid with automated buttons for most everything; a turn tracker, health display, and resource display as well as full battle music. Outside of combat, you can expect some ambient noise and background music with an overlay of the characters, important information, and resource tracking when handling the normal routines - theater of the mind will be the name of the game here utilizing backdrops to set the scene but words to fill out the finer details. Some maps will also be provided for exploration, these will often be simple in design used to indicate rooms, party positions, and any important key details - think Legend of Zelda maps. Combat is meant to be a careful consideration, though it will be common - you will need to learn the weaknesses and strengths of the foes you fight so that you can bring them down more effectively and quickly. I will try my best to be distinctive with voices, but I am not very good at them - I will be very upfront and honest about that. But all important NPCs will have their own icons/tokens and a system is in place for me to bring them forward when they are speaking so you will always know who it is that is commanding the stage. Rules are important to know how to play the game, but there are some situations where following the rules will result in a lack-luster experience for all, in those cases if it is an agreed upon thing by all, we will forego rules in favor of fun and narrative building.

Homebrew rules

As of now - there are no homebrewed rules that I use, but there are homebrewed monsters as FU does not have a widely extensive bestiary to pull from as of yet - so no worries on spoilers for monsters should you purchase the book yourself!

Safety

How Sylus creates a safe table

In Foundry I have a system of cards that all players will have access to in order to discreetly send a flag if something is occurring that is causing discomfort as well as for voting on pursuit of something that may cause discomfort or stress. Yellow is for caution - meaning that the subject matter at hand is tolerable, but anything more will be too much. Red means that it is not tolerable and I will work towards bringing things back to a more manageable level. Green is for a full send - everything is okay. Alongside this my DMS are always open and can be used to inform of anything that is bothering or upsetting as well as bring attention to some concerns. We can also discuss any other methods during Session 0 that we could use. If something that occurred could pose an issue with some players, or did pose an issue with some players, at the end of the session I will always hold a debriefing - this can be used to freely discuss anything and everything with no judgements. This can range from content that was an issue, a particular NPC or behavior, or concerns with the story or even characters. Any and all feedback is welcome here as a group or in the DMs. It should also be noted here that most content warning tags are there for possibility and are not guaranteed - should you see one on there that could pose an issue, please be sure to bring it to light during Session 0 when we go over the boundaries lists and we can either eliminate it as an option or discuss its application or potential applications to clear up any confusions or concerns. This is a chill game - but even so, I do enjoy having some realism thrown in to help flesh out the world or use as a motivator against someone or something.
