About the adventure

Ships ply their trade across the sky, carried by the winds of magic they bring goods from one skyland to the next. Every day a new route through the winds is discovered, every day a new skyland found. The last cycle was a veritable golden age for man and though the world below has lain untouched for 10,000 years now there is talk of returning to the birthplace of all life. Yet trouble is brewing on the vast skyland of Illia. A plague has swept across the land killing tens of thousands in its wake, the illness resists magical cures and the kings and queens of the realm have gone in desperation to the Temple of Vitae looking for answers. The High Priest of Vitae has declared the disease a punishment from the god Corvid for the practice of necromancy, it seems now that a war between the twin gods Corvid and Vitae is on the horizon. What will you do in the wake of such chaos? Will you stand by idly, or will you fight? Will you march with the armies of Corvid or Vitae when the time comes? Or will you flee the madness of war? This I cannot answer, it is for you to decide, but remember this; the bloody shadow of war stretches far.

About me

My father introduced my siblings and I to role playing games when I was about eight years old, the first game I played was Warhammer Fantasy 1st edition, and many of my earliest gaming experiences were older games from his childhood. I have many fond memories of my siblings and I gathering around the table to play and now I want to bring that experience to as many people as possible! I prefer to run homebrew campaigns and worlds, but as long as I get to share the hobby I love, I am happy to run just about anything.

Character creation

Creating your character

I would like to run a session 0 so that I can sit down with all of you to help generate your characters as well as go over any triggers that players may have and player expectations. I can also provide progenerated characters with minimal player input if needed. We will be starting at level 1 and you can expect the campaign to run to around level 10, possibly higher depending on player input and engagement.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All players will need to have a mic, a webcam would be great but is absolutely optional. Players may use dice they have, or they may use dice rolling software online. I intend to use discord for play. This game will use theater of the mind for combat.

What Gabriel brings to the table

While we play I will use voices, I do not promise they will be consistent, or that they will be perfect, but they should be entertaining enough. I will also likely reach out to each of you periodically to check in with how things are going, and to have opportunities to develop your characters further. One of my favorite things to do as a game master is to really build my campaign around the characters that my players build, weaving their backstories into the greater story, and giving each player who wants it a chance to be in the lime light. I do tend to run more serious games, and while it is good to joke, and I will do so myself, it is best to approach things with the intent that your character themself is not a joke, but a living breathing person in the world.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is of course a bonus action. If your character is dropped to 0 hitpoints in combat, and you would prefer a heroic death to dropping unconscious and making death saves, I will allow the player to choose for their life to end in a final heroic moment. More details on that later.

Safety

How Gabriel creates a safe table

I intend to keep the game fast paced and oriented towards roleplay, narrative and a high degree of focus on character development. Combat will certainly occur during the course of the game but will ideally be handled quickly. Expect a rules lite game. A lines and veils document will be provided using a green light, yellow light, red light method. All yellow and red light items will be posted in the chat before each session with no names attached to who marked them. I will also reach out to players periodically to see how they are doing. Players will also be allowed to send an X, N or O message on Discord if something about the narrative is uncomfortable, no questions asked.
