About the adventure

The Sunless Citadel is a classic D&D module from 2000 updated for modern play. The story begins in the small town of Oakhurst where strange happenings are becoming more frequent. Grazing livestock have been mysteriously dying in the night and now seasoned adventurers have gone missing in the infamous Sunless Citadel. Will you join us to share in the thrill of the unknown, for the lure of treasure, and risk never returning? These adventures will start with level 1 characters with the potential of running to level 3 and maybe beyond. We aim to create a welcoming space for all players, whether brand new or seasoned pro. Beginners welcome! Robert has been playing D&D for about 20 years, but feels like he is learning something new (or relearning something) everyday! Madi has been playing D&D for about three years and brings a spark of fun and creativity to everything she touches! Come learn with us! LGBTQIA+ friendly, everyone is welcome! (as long as they're polite to the other players!)

About me

Hi y’all, we are Robert and Madi! We are a married couple that co-DMs together, bringing the strengths of both to our tables! We are originally from Texas, now living in Rhode Island with my wife with our senior pup Winston—a very opinionated (and deeply spoiled) old man dog. Robert is a lifelong game enthusiast who has been playing D&D, Pathfinder, and other tabletop RPGs since the early 2000s. Madi has been playing D&D for about 3 years and brings an added spark of joy and creativity to all her games. We have a strong foundation in Dungeons & Dragons and several years of experience GMing across a variety of settings. Our games are rooted in collaborative storytelling, where roleplay and character choices drive the adventure. We love putting our improv skills to work to keep things fresh and reactive—whether that’s inventing a ridiculous NPC on the spot or breaking into an off-key parody song (usually for Winston’s benefit, but I don’t mind an audience). Above all, we aim to create a welcoming space for all players—whether you’re brand new or a seasoned pro—to laugh, explore, and get lost in a great story.

Character creation

Creating your character

We would love for you to have an idea or character concept in mind when you join the campaign, but we will begin building our characters together during the Session Zero. We will be using Dndbeyond to build the characters and be predominately using the new 2024 ruleset, but options from the 2014 rules will be allowed, just discuss them with us beforehand.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account, an Owlbear Rodeo account, and a Dndbeyond account. Invitations to the Discord server will be sent out once the campaign begins. We will send links to other places in Discord once the campaign is underway.

What Robert and Madi Mitchell brings to the table

Madi and Robert use a co-DM style that brings a uniquely immersive and engaging experience to the table. With two storytellers guiding the adventure, NPCs come to life through authentic back-and-forth dialogue, giving roleplay the energy of a stage performance. Their teamwork allows one DM to focus on mechanics, combat, and pacing while the other ensures players are supported, engaged, and woven into the narrative. This division of focus not only keeps the game flowing smoothly but also makes it easier to spotlight quieter players and balance different playstyles within the group. Their natural chemistry adds warmth and humor to the table, making each session feel collaborative, lively, and memorable. We try to make every session memorable and enjoyable for new players and veterans alike.

Homebrew rules

We will have some homebrew rules that will be discussed (and some even voted on) in the Session 0.

Safety

How Robert and Madi Mitchell creates a safe table

We will be using a traditional Lines and Veils document that will be shared with everyone before the session 0, we will also be incorporating X cards which will be messaged to the DMs directly, with the responses remaining anonymous to the rest of the party. After any potentially emotionally charged session Madi and Robert will reach out to each member of the group privately over Discord and ask how they're feeling about things and if they would like to discuss anything or try to shift the tone of the campaign.
