About the adventure

Beneath the surface of a fractured world, an ancient power stirs. Once, the Rune-Lords shaped reality itself through mastery of the four primal elements—Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Their empires fell to dust, their secrets buried in a labyrinth of stone and light. Now, the runes hum again, calling to those bold enough to uncover what the gods themselves abandoned. Secrets of the Forgotten Vault is a 2–3 session adventure set within a living dungeon bound by elemental magic. Every chamber is alive with shifting power—walls that breathe, traps that respond to balance and intent, and guardians carved from the bones of the elements themselves. What begins as a simple delve for treasure becomes a test of harmony, wisdom, and survival, where the elements are not just obstacles, but allies and teachers. At my table, story and imagination drive every scene. Expect cinematic storytelling, vivid atmosphere, and encounters that adapt to your choices. I favor the Rule of Cool—fun and creativity over rigid rule-lawyering. Whether you’re deciphering ancient runes, solving elemental puzzles, or negotiating with spectral guardians, every action can shape the world around you. The vault remembers every flame you kindle, every breath you steal, every stone you disturb. New players will find an easy on-ramp to adventure; veterans will discover layers of depth, lore, and challenge. You’ll face traps that test teamwork, puzzles that reward clever thinking, and moments where intuition and boldness matter more than the dice. Each session ends not just with loot, but with the sense that you’ve uncovered a piece of something vast—a mythology waiting to be rewritten by your hands. So gather your party. Bring your courage, your curiosity, and your wits. The Forgotten Vault awaits—its doors sealed by runes older than time, its treasures pulsing with elemental power. But remember: every rune you awaken listens back… and not all secrets wish to be found.

About me

I’m Keith Richie, the creative force behind Other Worlds Than These — a universe where music, stories, and adventures collide. For decades I’ve been a composer and sonic storyteller, crafting immersive soundscapes inspired by science fiction, fantasy, and myth. My music has been compared to Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, and Hans Zimmer, and now I’m bringing that same cinematic atmosphere to the tabletop. I’ve been running TTRPGs for about three years, with a focus on Dungeons & Dragons 5E. While my GM journey is still new compared to my musical career, my lifelong background in storytelling and composition lets me create immersive worlds where players feel like they’re stepping into a living soundtrack. As a GM, I focus on story-driven adventures, atmospheric immersion, and player agency. Rules are respected, but the story and your character moments come first. Every session is infused with cinematic soundscapes and narrative depth to make it unforgettable. Currently, I’m running my original adventure, Runes of Ruin: Secrets of the Forgotten Vault — a homebrew one-shot that typically spans 1–3 sessions, depending on how far the characters advance. Players explore ancient elemental vaults filled with danger, mystery, and lore. New players are welcome, and experienced adventurers will find unique challenges beyond the typical dungeon crawl. At my table, everyone’s voice matters, everyone gets spotlight time, and the dice always serve the story.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation for Runes of Ruin: Secrets of the Forgotten Vault is flexible and simple—designed so we can jump right into the adventure while still letting you create a character that feels personal and meaningful. Because this is a one-shot, you’re welcome to create your character before the session so we can begin immediately. If you’d like help, I’m happy to meet individually for a short session to walk through creation, answer questions, and ensure your character fits smoothly into the story. We’ll use Dungeons & Dragons 5E, starting at Level 3. You can use material from official sources such as the Player’s Handbook, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, and Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. Homebrew or Unearthed Arcana options are welcome—just check with me first to make sure they align with the tone and balance of the adventure. You may choose Standard Array, Point Buy, or roll for stats (we’ll roll together to keep things fair). Standard class equipment is fine, and I encourage players to include one small, story-driven item that hints at your background or reason for seeking the Vault. Each character should have a personal motivation—curiosity, greed, knowledge, destiny, or a mysterious pull toward the ruins. I’ll weave those threads directly into the opening scenes so the story feels like it begins with you, not around you. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned adventurer, I’ll make sure you feel at home in the world and confident in your role. Together, we’ll focus on collaboration, creativity, and immersion—because the best stories aren’t just told; they’re discovered.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We’ll use D&D Beyond Maps for our virtual tabletop, so each player will need a free D&D Beyond account. I’ll send a custom campaign invite link before the session—joining it lets you access all of my official 5E books and resources. You can wait to create your character until after joining the campaign so you can use those unlocked materials. If you’d like help building your character or you’re new to D&D Beyond, I’m happy to meet one-on-one before the game. We’ll use Discord for voice chat, so please have a working mic and account ready. Once you’re invited to the campaign and server, you’ll be fully set for the adventure. Bring your imagination—and maybe a good snack—the Vault awaits!

Safety

How Keith (aka Maestoso/The Old Bard) creates a safe table

My table is built on respect, communication, and fun. I use Lines & Veils—where Lines are topics we leave out completely and Veils are moments we “fade to black”—alongside the X/N/O system so everyone feels safe and heard. We’ll start with a quick Session 0 to check comfort levels and expectations, and I always do a short debrief afterward to ensure everyone leaves feeling good. Everyone is welcome here—no pressure, no judgment, just great stories and shared adventure.
