About the adventure

Newcomers to the TTRPG space, welcome! Previous MOTW players who want to try out a different class, welcome back! Whenever I talk to folks about TTRPGs and they say they're intimidated by D&D, I always point them to Monster of the Week. This is a lightweight system with only 5 main stats to keep track of, and for which you only need two 6-sided dice, which you can find in almost every board game you might own. Like I say up top, the way it plays and the different types of character you can be is most comparable to playing through your very own version of Buffy, X-Files, Scooby-Doo, Supernatural, etc-- if it's an episodic show about hunting a different monster every week or so, you can draw a direct comparison to MotW! The purpose of this repeating one-shot is to give folks who have never played Monster of the Week (or perhaps never played a TTRPG at all!) a way to try out the game system and learn what's what. I absolutely adore this game, and I love showing it to people so they too can experience how cool yet easy it is. [[[[SESSION BREAKDOWN:]]]] We will of course be taking breaks, but those aside, here is the hour by hour breakdown. This may vary depending on how many folks we have signed up, but expect it to go approximately like this. HOUR 1 - SYSTEM. We'll be going over how familiar the group is with TTRPGs in general, then talking through how the game system works in Monster of the Week. This will be about rolls, Moves, and the broad strokes of what you can mechanically expect from this game. I’ll also be going through your familiarity with the genre— this’ll help me give you some touch stones or points of comparison as I explain the system. HOUR 2 - HUNTERS. Here we'll be going through the different types of character you can be, and how they work. I'll be giving an overview of each, going through some of the coolest highlights for each one, and offering examples for each from the media you’re most familiar with. Be sure to note down which ones you feel most drawn to! At the end of this hour, I’ll be giving you a pre-generated character to play our test game with. (Or, if you're a returning player that wants to brush up on the basics, feel free to create your own character during this section!) HOUR 3+4 - PLAY. And now we play the game! Note: This will be a little more roleplay-lite than my usual style when running MotW due to time constraints, but ultimately you'll get a chance to see how it feels to play this game. (If you enjoy yourself, I usually have a motw game running, or feel free to book me!)

About me

My name is Knack, let's tell some stories together! I've been running games since I first started playing dnd a little under 10 years ago, from one-shots to multi year endeavors. My specialties lie in narrative and collaborative games like Daggerheart and Monster of the Week, and in that vein I like to bring a level of player choice and collaboration into every game I run. While I'm most versed in the D&D 5e and PBTA systems, I'm always excited to learn and implement systems that players might want to try out. In my day job, I'm a cartoonist, so I tend to make custom assets or character art for the games I run. Let's roll some dice and put some characters in situations!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will be IN-SESSION. I’ll be giving you a pre-generated character to play our test game with. If you're a returning player that wants to brush up on the basics, feel free to create your own character -- but PLEASE BE AWARE, we will not be playing until hour 3, and if you create your character ahead of time, I fear you may be bored during the learning portions of the session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To be ready to play our game, you should have: - Digitally: a discord account (I'll have sent you a link to the discord server ahead of time), and a way to view + alter PDFs (any drawing program, Adobe Acrobat, MS Paint, photopea, etc). - Physically: a webcam, headphones, and microphone. You can play without web cameras on, but it is STRONGLY encouraged. Some set of headphones, or other way to mitigate echo, is also required.

What Knack brings to the table

- I'll be providing and walking you through each PDF that you'll need in order to play Monster of the Week. Most PDFs that you need to play this game are available for free on the Evil Hat website, but I ask that you download the one I provide here, since I've marked it up and numbered it for ease of following along. - I've taught this game to many groups, and I'm here to answer any and all questions you may have on this system! - Expect voices, music/ambience, and more, once we actually get to the playing portion of the game. - I like to give opportunity for PC narration (and I'll jump in should anyone need help), the ability to "fail forward," and rule of cool where applicable.

How Knack creates a safe table

LINES AND VEILS: I ask that these get filled out before our session, so that I can gauge which oneshot I should run in the back half of the session for the group. BREAKS: I run my game to take 15 minute breaks every 90 minutes or so, but if a player ever needs a break ahead of that, I'm happy to oblige. X CARDS: If something comes up in game, such as something triggering that you didn't realize was triggering until that moment, X "cards" are also implemented in my games. You can use one physically (like an X on a post-it) and hold it up on camera, or send an X in the sidebar chat of discord.
