About the adventure

Come and play in the pulpy action-hero(ine) world of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars (Barsoom) books, starring John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and Tars Tarkas! Nevermind that awful movie - this is not that! This is the books themselves, as true to as-written as someone (like me) who has read them all multiple times can make them! Swordfighting! Lots of it! And you are GOOD at swordfighting. This is not D&D. You are not squishy. This is not Warhammer. You hit almost all the time, unless you're fighting the main villain of course. And you can hack your way through reams of minions. And there are fliers (flying machines, large and small). And sometimes they crash and strand you in dangerous places! Giant 4-armed white apes! Calots (cute and ferocious dogs!) Thoats! (8-legged mounts) Ruined cities to explore! Weird science! Invisibility machines! Mad scientists who can put your brain into another body (maybe without you asking!) Gigantic magnets that draw all the flying ships in and make them crash! Radium rifles! Wars between opposing cities! Hordes of 15' tall Green Men of Mars charging across the wasteland towards your position! Atmosphere (air)-making machines that can be turned off by madmen and potentially destroy all life on Mars if they are not turned on soon! Session 0 and first two sessions free!

About me

I've been running roleplaying games since 1980. I'm new-ish to hosting games on-line, but what I may lack in technical expertise on the platform I hope to make up for in enthusiasm and making it fun for you! I play "rule of cool" and I look forward to roleplay with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will do character creation together (1-1 with GM) in a free session on Discord. If you have the books and know the system, you can do your own of course.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

No preparation required. There is NO expectation of knowing the system or having the rulesbooks. Ideally (but not necessary) you would have read the first novel of Edgar Rice Burroughs set on Mars (Barsoom) book, Princess of Mars (it's short and super-fun, a fast read and easy to find on-line for practically free).

What Swords and Sorcery brings to the table

I will provide a welcoming space, a deep knowledge of the setting, a rule-of-cool game environment that is very narrative (vs rules-crunchy) that allows space for you to adventure in a pulpy, heroic environment where your character is very heroic.

Homebrew rules

We will adapt any rules if/as needed to make them even more fun.

Safety

How Swords and Sorcery creates a safe table

This is a very general audience game setting (the novels were written in the 1910's and '20s), however any concerns can be identified to me in advance, or if anything arises. Note that because of the world's historical context, there were fictionalized skin colours for races on Mars (Barsoom) that do NOT correspond to Earth. That is, Mars had people with red skin, black skin, white skin, green skin and yellow skin none of which correspond to real Earth. There was (is) racism in the context of Mars where the different species of people were often at war. This is maintained in the game. There were (and are in the game) heroes and villains of each skin colour. In the books, women's role in society was similar to that in Europe in the 20's. However, in our game, men and women (and other genders) have a much more flexible role that for game purposes will be considered equal.
