About the adventure
Journey Back to the Roots of Fantasy: 1st Edition AD&D in Greyhawk! Ready for D&D as it truly began? Step into the rich, dangerous world of Greyhawk with custom 1st Edition AD&D campaigns. Perfect for veterans seeking nostalgic thrills or newcomers eager to discover foundational RPG mechanics. Prepare for a world where magic is mysterious, monsters are truly monstrous, and heroes are forged through adversity. Why 1st Edition AD&D? A Contrast with 5th Edition While 5th Edition D&D offers streamlined, heroic play, 1st Edition AD&D provides a distinctly different, rewarding experience: Gritty Realism & Peril: Every encounter is a genuine threat. Low-level characters are fragile, resources are scarce, and survival demands caution and strategic thinking. Victories are hard-won and deeply satisfying. Encumbrance, saving throws, and resource management are tangible mechanics that heighten the sense of danger and reward careful play. Dungeons are formidable adversaries, requiring critical survival skills like mapping and light management. Character Progression as a Journey: Character growth is a slower, more deliberate climb. Gaining a level is momentous, reflecting significant survival and achievement. The power curve is steep, making the journey from novice to hero transformative. Rare magic items are crucial to progression. Beyond combat, skillful roleplaying and problem-solving also yield experience. Emphasis on GM Adjudication & World Logic: Less is explicitly defined, encouraging GM improvisation and rulings based on world logic. This fosters a dynamic, responsive environment and truly collaborative storytelling, leading to emergent, unique narratives. Greyhawk's Untamed Wilderness: A Sandbox of Adventure: Our custom Greyhawk campaigns delve into the original, often morally ambiguous lore. As the cradle of D&D, Greyhawk is steeped in history. Explore bustling cities, treacherous forests, haunted ruins, and monster-infested coasts. Powerful factions and ancient powers shape the Flanaess. This true sandbox setting ensures player-driven adventures, where your choices genuinely shape the world. For New Players: Your Gateway to Classic D&D! Never played 1st Edition AD&D? I'll guide you through character creation, core mechanics, and strategic nuances. You'll learn D&D's foundations, gaining a deeper appreciation for its evolution. For Experienced Players: Relive the Golden Age! Return to AD&D's glory days. Relish the challenge, embrace the grit, and rediscover the magic(user). Our custom campaigns offer fresh challenges within beloved Greyhawk. Appreciate detailed mechanics and strategic play. Connect with a community that values classic D&D. Join me for an unforgettable adventure where every decision matters, every victory is hard-won, and the spirit of classic D&D reigns supreme! Prepare for a journey into the heart of fantasy, where true heroes are forged in peril and cunning.

About me
Making the Old School the new cool. Greetings TTRPG fans, my name is Kimo (Key-Mo), and I'm a forever GM/DM. I started playing TTRPGs way back in the '70s, and it saved my life in more ways than one – a compelling story I am happy to share with my players. I stopped playing in the mid-'90s, but now I'm back as a Gygaxian agent of the golden age of role-playing games. I specialize in Old School AD&D 1e, but I will happily run campaigns in 5e, as well as GM my favorites from the TSR collection, including Gamma World, Top Secret, Boot Hill, and Jeff Dee's Villains and Vigilantes.

Creating your character
It Begins With Session Zero: We'll start with the fundamentals. What kind of hero (or perhaps anti-hero!) do you envision? Consider these initial questions: What are your character's core abilities and talents? Are you a nimble rogue, skilled in the shadows and with a rapier wit? A wise and learned cleric, devoted to a deity and wielding divine power? A hardy warrior, clad in steel and ready to face any foe? Or perhaps a student of the arcane arts, bending the very fabric of reality to your will? Don't worry about specific classes and levels just yet; let's focus on the broad strokes of their skills and inclinations. What drives your character? What are their motivations and goals? Are they driven by a thirst for adventure and discovery? Do they seek wealth and renown? Are they on a personal quest for vengeance or redemption? Perhaps they are fiercely loyal to a cause or a community. Understanding what makes your character tick will inform their actions throughout the campaign. Where do they come from in the world of Greyhawk? This vibrant setting is brimming with diverse cultures and regions. Are they a street-smart native of the bustling Free City, familiar with its intricate social web? Perhaps they hail from the rugged Wild Coast, hardened by its untamed wilderness? Or maybe they are a traveler from a distant land, bringing unique skills and perspectives to the Flanaess. Even a simple idea of their origins can add depth to their background. Think about your character's history. What significant events have shaped them into who they are today? Do they have any notable relationships – family, friends, rivals? What are some defining moments from their past? You don't need a novel-length backstory right now, but a few key details can bring them to life. Once we have a general sense of your characters, we'll delve into the specifics of game mechanics – choosing your class, skills, and equipment. Think of this as selecting the specific tools and materials your character will use on their adventures. We'll make sure everyone understands the rules and how their character functions within them. This session zero is a collaborative process. I'm here to answer your questions, offer suggestions based on the world of Greyhawk, and help you flesh out your concepts. My aim is to ensure you have a character you're excited to play, one that feels integrated into the setting and has the potential for a compelling story arc. So, take a moment, let your imagination wander through the lands of the Flanaess, and begin to envision the hero (or intriguing individual) you will become. The stage is set, the fabric awaits, and the crafting of adventure!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
The very minimum you will need play: You will want to bring your character information to each session and whatever accoutrement that helps you record and monitor your progress during game play. You will also need a PC, with a webcam and mic, as well as a relatively quiet place to engage with the campaign. System compatibility: Depending on what platform(s) are used, you will need a players account for Discord, Roll20, and or D&D Beyond. Zoom, Microsoft Teams and or Google Meets. I encourage players to bring the following to the game table: Personal writing implements, a note book, scratch paper, personal dice & dice tray, mini's that represent their character(s), Additional comfort items to keep close by: Bottled water, snacks, and warm clothing if needed to reduce time away from the table.
What Old School brings to the table
What I bring to the table: Rule Books for 1e AD&D and D&D 5th edition 2024 additional printed resources, character sheets, modules and PDFs. Gridded maps, tokens, dice, dice trays, miniatures, Ultimate Dungeon Terrain battle zone, gaming accessories and props. Pen and Paper play and or Virtual Table Top Maps and resources from D&D Beyond or Roll20. If you're low tech leaning we can use Zoom, MS Teams to conduct sessions or if you prefer a more digital approach go full VTT with maps and assets at D&D Beyond or Roll20.
Homebrew rules
I use Ultimate Dungeon Terrain in combat sequences. Homebrew rules can be discussed during session zero.

How Old School creates a safe table
We discuss game safety during Session Zero covering any concerns players may have with content and conduct. If a Zero session is skipped players will be asked to submit their personal concerns directly to the GM prior to Session One. A subsequent discussion will be initiated before game play and players will agree to the process of handling safety issues and establishing parameters to ensure everyone at the table is comfortable and acknowledged.
