About the adventure

Falkrest Abbey is a level 1-3 dungeon originally written for Old School Essentials and adapted by me for Shadowdark. This adventure will offer it all: Dangerous exploration, deadly combat, thoughtful puzzles, and a challenging ending. If you're a fan of old-school style adventuring and dungeon delving and an opportunity to play everything Shadowdark has to offer, look no further. While the titular dungeon will occupy a session or two, speaking from personal experience, there is a SO MUCH going on in the background of this adventure that it will readily spill over into an ongoing campaign. In short, Falkrest Abbey will serve as a springboard for us to jump into a hex-crawling, kingdom-spanning adventure. With the Abbey behind us, we'll turn our attention to the horizon and see what else this region will have to offer - where will the party return to lick their wounds? What will do they do with their treasure? What complications will follow their harrowing survival(?) of this legendary Abbey?

About me

Hey there, I'm Matt! I'm a pretty busy family man, father of 3 kids ages 10 and under, but I've always set aside time for TTRPGs which have been a part of my life since high school years. At every step of life I've managed to maintain my status as a "career GM," even sometimes running games for my kids. I've GM'd games at GenCon independently, full-time, for the past 4 years. My game interests tend towards simpler, 'indie' kind of games. Examples are Shadowdark, 'Borgs, Cairne, Dragonbane, Mothership, Alien RPG, Liminal Horror, and so forth.

Character creation

Creating your character

Please create a LEVEL TWO character per the standard Shadowdark rules. All 'official' material is allowed, plus Unnatural Selection. Highly recommend the use of shadowdarklings.net in order to make and manage your character. Please share the character PRIOR to the start of the game.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The campaign will be managed and played on Discord. Please message me @grimkok or join the server here: https://discord.gg/suW44yuU Our VTT will be Owlbear Rodeo.

What Matt brings to the table

Instead of managing audio, I prefer to provide a 'recommended soundtrack' for players to listen and manage at their discretion. I also like to OPTIONALLY record and publish gameplay on YouTube, so we'll have journaling of our adventure: http://www.youtube.com/@inclinedeclinegaming2541 No gaming material is necessary for play; I will provide all rules/guidance as needed. Note the comprehensive Player Quickstart guide contains ALL rules a player would need and is available for free from thearcanelibrary.com.

Homebrew rules

Pass/Fail Initiative: - DC 12 DEX check to act before threats; else go after. Light: (Not using real-time torch timers) - Light-carrying characters test their light die (d8 for Torches) at the end of every turn. On a 1-2, the light dims and the die goes down a step (d8 > d6 > d4 > d2 > Extinguished). Light checks can also be prompted by tumbling through water, monster attacks, etc.

Safety

How Matt creates a safe table

When joining, please share Lines and Veils. Note I have a HARD LINE for sexual themes, racism, bigotry, and discussion of real-world politics. If lines/veils need to be shared beyond that, please do so. Otherwise, join our game with the intent of contributing to a welcoming and collaborative space and contributing to the good time had by all. During session, any player can pause the game by saying "X" or making a gesture with their hands to sidebar with the GM for quiet resolution.
