About the adventure

It's been a rough couple of weeks traveling, what with the nebula storms and close calls with pirates. The Federation is useless, unless they want a cut of the profit. But at least this job is easy; all we gotta do is haul this single container across the system and we'll make a cool mil. What could go wrong? - Do you like the ALIEN franchise? Do you enjoy hard scifi? Are you a fan of cyberpunk aesthetics in a blue-collar space world? Then I welcome you to MOTHERSHIP. Space is a harsh and unforgiving place. Whether you're a destitute blue collar worker contracted to do haul or retrieve some asset, or a contract killer who hunts down unlucky sons-of-bitches on other planets, or a bodyguard hired to protect a high value target of a mob syndicate, you gotta do what you gotta do to pay the bills. And the bills just keep coming. Explore ancient alien ruins, retrieve priceless artifacts, hunt down bounties, destroy Federation or Corpo supplies, and do what it takes to survive! Mothership is a rules-light, high flavor game that leans in on the fun retro-futuristic tropes of classic 80s-90s scifi movies. This game will run through a series of the best modules made for Mothership, such as Pound of Flesh, Hull Breach, Abilities Considered Unnatural, Desert Moon of Karthus, and others! I invite you do climb aboard the ship and experience this gritty space-cyberpunk world unfold into intrigue and horror the likes of which you've never seen!

About me

I love playing games that create interesting stories. For me, the collaborative storytelling happening is the main reason we play, and while I do my absolute best to be up-to-snuff on the rules of any game system I run, I will always favor a wonderful storytelling moment over a strict interpretation of the rules. I believe the best stories are ones where the players get to make meaningful and hard choices. Player agency is first and foremost in my games, and I love to play games where choices are dynamic to the situation, making each decision something to really think about but not agonize over. It’s also important to me to clarify, I love good wholesome and campy heroic tales as well! Like typical in D&D adventures, where the villains are unambiguously evil and the heroes are likely to come out on top. I tend to spice these up by adding cleverly woven backstory elements from each character into the adventure, making it both more personal and higher stakes. During the game, I love, and take time, to describe things in vivid detail, while pointedly noting anything important to players. If a player doesn’t understand something in my description, I’ll happily take a quick second to compare it to something in Movies or TV or video games to hopefully bridge that gap. Lastly, I pride myself on keeping plots and quests easily digestible. I don’t expect players to all take careful notes, so I form my games and stories around this to make them engaging without being so tangled and overly complicated that it becomes hard to follow what is going on and why. I want everyone to come to the table excited to play, without needing to take “homework” back with them when the session is over. If you're excited about being in-character, enjoy doing a silly voice or accent, look for ways to have dramatic or heartfelt scenes with other PCs, and possibly watch a lot of D&D actual-plays, I think you and I will get along just fine!

Character creation

Creating your character

During Session Zero, I will take the time to walk through a simple no-roll character generation, so everyone is on equal footing, and you can follow along with me to make a character! Alternatively, there is a Mothership RPG Character Creation tool here, for those of you who want to roll a random character: https://mothership-cockpit.netlify.app/generators/character

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You should prepare by coming up with a simple, but solid, backstory for your character. What kind of work do they do? How much debt do they have? How did they end up in that line of work? How is their family? Most spaceships aren't piloted alone, so how might you have met up with the other crew members? These questions, and similar ones should be thought about, but you need not write anything down! Just keep them in mind for your character's motivation, and we'll talk more during session 0.

What GM Joe brings to the table

I'm bringing a full suite of maps, as well as PDFs of all required materials. Foundry VTT is where we will house the Character Sheets, dice rolls, and maps for exploration. I always bring along visual aides, that way people are focused on the roleplay! Additionally, I ALWAYS do voices, so if you've ever wanted to try and do an accent or voice for a character, please join me! Good sound effects and voices are my favorite part of any roleplay. I also have a suite of music and sound effects that I will play through Discord as well - typically I stream a window on my computer which will play the theme music for the roleplay. Mood music is a must!

Homebrew rules

The only house rules I will be using is the simple point-buy no-roll character generation. I like to have every player start off on equal footing!

Safety

How GM Joe creates a safe table

On session 0, we'll find time to talk about the themes and content that will be a part of this game. Without spoiling any of the story, I'll cover the major horror themes and we'll decide together what everyone is comfortable with being in the game and what would be better left out. This time will also be used to discuss character backstory, for however detailed each player would like it to be! I want everyone to be invested in their character, but don't feel like you have to come up with a very intricate backstory- more details can be added later on as you come to know your character better.
