About the adventure

Fanewick was once a place of great abundance and peace — dangerous to those unfamiliar with the land, but a cornucopia for those who respected its ways. When Haven invaded the wilds and forced the land into an eternal spring, a dangerous bloom called the Witherwilde took hold and now threatens the lives of all who live there. In Wonders of the Witherwilde, you will play unlikely heroes from humble beginnings who are reckoning with a newfound duty to save themselves and those you love from the growing danger all around you.

About me

Hi there, I'm glad you're here! I'm a professional television producer based out of Portland, Oregon and a rabid enjoyer of and advocate for TTRPGs. I firmly believe that TTRPGs are the best way to have fun with friends, meet new people, and grow your imagination and I'm all about showing that magic to as many people as possible! I fell in love with D&D about five years ago when I first listened to The Adventure Zone on a cross-country road trip and was instantly hooked. I remember getting home and buying dice and the Player's Handbook, even though I didn't have anyone to play with. I would just sit and build character after character and fidget with my dice. After some start and stop play with random groups I was able to find by going to local board game shops and mead halls, I decided the only way to play regularly with a good group of people was to learn how to DM myself and coerce all my friends to play with me (this is of course before I found this really cool service!) I've been GMing since and I really love it, but I have only so many friends to run games for. So I've come to Start Playing to expand the number of games I'm able to run. I welcome players from all different experience levels, backgrounds, and identities because inclusiveness is key to communal gaming! If you're a kind person who is interested in TTRPGs, I want you in my game! Continue to my GM style section to see if my gaming style is the right fit for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create characters together in Session Zero. In case you want to get a head start or if you haven't made a character in Daggerheart and want to have an idea of the process before we go over it together, here is a link to a bunch of free downloadable PDFs from Daggerheart because they're awesome and haven't put everything behind a paywall! https://www.daggerheart.com/downloads/ Of particular use is the PDF of "Additional Downloads" which gives character creation and game mechanic guidelines to folks who might not have played before. Also, if you can I encourage you to buy the book or the PDF of the book, it's gorgeous and worth having if you're interested in continuing to play this game system.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Make sure you have an account on Discord, Roll 20, and Demiplane prior to starting. Discord will be where we meet, Roll 20 will be our VTT, and Demiplane gives you access to Daggerheart content that you can then use in Roll 20.

What Dungeon Crawlin' Collin brings to the table

There will be a good balance of roleplay, world creation, exploration, character development, and combat. I'll be making custom maps for our exploration and combat encounters. I usually run ambient music and sound effects. I will be doing voices for each of the NPCs. Big proponent of the Rule of Cool. Not super granular, I'm never going to keep track of your arrows or the amount/kind of food in your bag.

Homebrew rules

Homebrew will be discussed in further detail during Session Zero, but expect there to be a fair amount of it. Monsters, items, places, and potentially slight alterations to certain mechanics (like getting a choice of gaining 2 hope after a critical success if you don't have a stress to clear).

Safety

How Dungeon Crawlin' Collin creates a safe table

This isn't fun unless we do the work to make it fun for everyone. That means taking everyone's limits regarding acceptable content seriously. We will be using multiple tools to assess and maintain our limits throughout the course of the campaign. If you're new to the topic here is a helpful resource that explains the concept and several different variations of safety tools: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/114jRmhzBpdqkAlhmveis0nmW73qkAZCj Specifically for this campaign, we will use a Session 0, Lines and Veils, XNO cards, Open Door, Stars and Wishes, and Aftercare. If there are any other safety tools you would like to use during the course of the campaign, we can always discuss as needed.
