About the adventure

"There are military operations all over the world that rely upon off-the-books financing and plausible deniability. The operatives for these missions are all dead, at least legally. Maybe they are MIA from a mission in a warzone. Maybe they were killed in an accident during training maneuvers. You get the idea. These patriots, having cut themselves off from life outside these missions, now lead a life of secrecy dedicated to whatever mission they are assigned to at the moment. They are the Zombie Squad. Now, here's your next assignment..." This game uses the d20 Modern system. The overall length of the campaign will be based on player interest. Player characters not part of the team at the start of the campaign can be easily added to the mix using the excuse of "We've got a new recruit." or something just as simple to explain. Any and all listed trigger warnings are potential due to the overall setting of the campaign, but they are not guaranteed to appear. I figure that it is better safe than sorry to list what could appear rather than there be unpleasant surprises later on.

About me

I have been a player and game master for several games for over 30 years. I have a home-brew background as well as a published TTRPG background. I tend to stick with older games, as I am often not fond of the newer versions. My style is partially scripted and partially off-the-cuff. I tend to be tough, but I always try to be fair. I'm not perfect and I do make mistakes. If I make one, let me know and I will rectify it. I have been know to chuck rules I don't like, or at least modify them (and make you know about them up front!) so that they are less unfavorable. I want my players to feel challenged, but still have fun. I prefer role-playing and not roll-playing. I am cool with new players and veterans. I stick to older editions of multiple games mainly because I actually prefer them over the newer editions as opposed to being too cheap to upgrade. That said, I am not above running a game in an edition I am not fond of, but I tend to charge more for it as the trade off.

Character creation

Creating your character

All characters must be completed prior to the start of the first session the player takes part in. For players joining the game at session 1, they need to create a 3rd overall level character. For players joining later on in the campaign, your starting level will be determined by where the rest of the players are as of when you sign up. Players are to stick to using the main d20 Modern Players' Guide and the Weapons book for character creation and equipment choices. The choice of some equipment may be subject to review. No lone wolf types. No characters that are going to be a liability to the team. No characters who are going to turn traitor down the line. Simpler put, all characters need to be able to function within a group/team dynamic. As I am only human, if I think of something else later on that will affect character creation, you will be informed of it. I am always free to assist with character creation. For stat determination, roll 4d6, then drop the lowest die.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All players need to have a Discord account, as that is where the game will be played. Players need to have either real dice or an honest dice roller. Players will need a working microphone so as to be heard by the GM and the other players. Don't worry about a webcam, unless you feel it's absolutely critical for everyone else to see you. If you don't already know the rules, I will gladly teach them to you or you can read them yourself on your own if you have access to the appropriate source materials. Barring that, for players new to the system's first few sessions, I will gladly also explain the rules as we go, as I understand that some players learn easier/better from being shown in a more hands-on setting. As this game is open to all player experience levels, seasoned players are politely requested to give players new to the system time to catch on and are thanked for their patience and understanding ahead of time.

What JP McClendon brings to the table

For players that don't already have the materials, I do, including copies of blank character sheets. For some rules, I will be strictly sticking to their write-up. For others, I am flexible if I think there is a bit of wiggle room. As for my GM style, major NPCs tend to have their own voice, even if I am not putting on a voice.

Safety

How JP McClendon creates a safe table

Virtually all listed triggers are potential. Just because a posted trigger is shown on the list does not a guarantee that it will ever actually come up, but the fact that it is possible that it might is why I have listed it. Obviously, my intention is never to upset, offend, or trigger anyone, either on purpose or accidental. I request that should something ever come up, that a player let it be known on the spot rather than waiting to tell me after a session. A player's comfort with the game is a priority to me.
