About the adventure

This is a game to celebrate fall and its cozy and eerie charm. Heavily inspired by a popular autumn show, this adventure starts with you and the party in a forest with no memory of how you arrived. In this episodic campaign, you and the party will journey through the woods trying to find your way out before you forget that you had a home. Along the way, you'll meet strange characters, explore spooky situations, and find that even when things are dark and scary, there is always hope for something good to happen. This campaign aims to evoke the feeling of fall, the eeriness of Halloween, and the warmth and coziness that can come with things working out. If that sounds good to you, then you're the right person to join. This game will have some violence and mature themes, but it is not meant to be graphic in any way. Think fear of the unknown instead of in-your-face horror—spooky and eerie, not gore and distress. If you have any concerns, reach out to me and I'll do my best to explain and help you feel comfortable.

About me

Just like with movies and books, there are TTRPGs I'll never forget. How wonderful would it be for more people to have experiences and memories like that? I'm still in love with this hobby even after 20 years. Still reading? Well, here are some other bits about me: 🐝I'm a beekeeper 👶I'm a dad of two kiddos 📈I'm a freelance software consultant 🍗I love cooking 🎓I have training as a facilitator and life coach (I think this helps me as a GM) 📚I've published adventures and RPGs in game jams, and authored a book on tech careers

Character creation

Creating your character

We will use Cairn to play, and you may generate a character using the standard rules. Those rules can be found here: https://cairnrpg.com/second-edition/players-guide/character-creation/ You can use an online generator here: https://cairnrpg.com/second-edition/tools/character-generator/ For your physical traits and background tables, you may pick what you like or roll and keep what is there.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will use Discord for voice. Please have the app and your account set up. Invite link for the server will be sent after you sign up. For VTT we will make very light use of Roll20. Please have an account set up. I will provide the link to that after you sign up as well. For dice rolling, you may roll physical dice, use Roll20, or any other online random dice roller. For character sheets, you can use whatever you like, but I would like a copy of them. You can share a link, post an image to Discord, or use any other means that is convenient for you to do so.

What Ryan (recursive.faults) brings to the table

When you play with me as a GM you can expect that I will work closely with you to make sure the game is one you enjoy. Things not being quite what they seem will be a heavy thematic element in this game, so explore the situation and world around you. You might find a rewarding alternative. I will have an adventure ready every time we play and work with the story that you help create at the table. This is a game about your choices, not the adventure I wrote. This is meant to be an episodic mini-campaign that will last up to 10 sessions. 📖I run games using the rules-as-written. However, I am far from legalistic in my approach. I will always ensure that your intent, desires, and details are taken into account in any decision. 🎶I might experiment with ambient music, but if I do, you are welcome to provide feedback. If it becomes distracting, I will turn it off. 📢I am not very comfortable doing voices, but even I can't help myself sometimes. ⚔️While combat is possible in this campaign, it is not a major feature and most choices for combat will be something the players choose. Having said that, I will warn you as to the lethality of situations and make sure you have the information you need to make an informed decision. 🕯️My philosophy as a GM is that meaningful choices are the foundation of fun and memorable games. I will give you information and always inform you of the likely consequences. I don't believe in surprising players or punishing them for not knowing something.

Safety

How Ryan (recursive.faults) creates a safe table

I will provide a link to a Lines and Veils document prior to the first game and we will have a discussion about its content before play. I'll also send out a form prior to the game to help better understand your hopes and desires for the game and lead a short debreif at the end of each game to seek feedback and make sure I'm doing what I can for your safety and fun. We will use chat and DMs for X cards so that you feel safe when doing that, and so that I don't miss it.
