About the adventure

When strange travelers start to trickle into the small, pastoral square of Okiri Village, they bring with them news of the Tidebloom Festival—a seven-night celebration that observes the dazzling natural phenomenon that heralds the return of summer across the island. Soon, the column of visitors swells, until they filter through the village both day and night: farmers, merchants and artisans ferrying their wares to sell at the festival, touring performers, and even the occasional spirit seeking to observe this time-honoured Obojiman custom. To kick off this campaign, you'll: 🗺️ Set out from Okiri Village, joining the column of travelers heading toward Yatamon 🔍 Navigate the Gift of Shuritashi's idyllic landscape alongside a handful of friendly-if-unusual travelling companions 🌴 Encounter the strange and fantastic people who call Obojima (and the Spirit Realm) their home 🏙️ Find your way safely to Yatamon, Obojima's largest city and home base for many festival-goers: a city built during the mysterious First Age and littered with the esoteric tech of a bygone age 🎏 Travel from Yatamon to Great Bend's Teruma Beach, to revel in this year's food, sports, and other festivities—it's said that observing the rites of Tidebloom brings good fortune in the year to come! As the final day of Tidebloom approaches, what fresh adventure awaits? Obojima is a whimsical leisure-fantasy campaign setting written for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. It takes its cues from cozy (but adventure-forward) narratives like Breath of the Wild, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the cinematic works of Hayao Miyazaki.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character options will be discussed during Session Zero, where I'll introduce the campaign premise (Tales From The Tidebloom Festival), and we'll chat as a group about the setting, with a special focus on the ancestries, backgrounds and character classes unique to Obojima. Characters will be rolled up in D&D Beyond between Session Zero and the first session of gameplay.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To play in this campaign, you'll need: - Accounts & Programs: Discord, Foundry, D&D Beyond - At least a passing familiarity with the Obojima setting (seriously go check it out, it's cool) and the basic gist of how to play D&D - A collaborative, respectful, and enthusiastic mindset

What forlackofabetternerd brings to the table

I'm a GM who's huge on player buy-in. My best experiences running games come from helping players cultivate investment in the world through the characters they create; and watching that investment pay off in their interactions and spotlight moments. I like Obojima because it encourages a thoughtful approach to the game, where not every conflict needs to end at the tip of a sword. When a situation does come down to combat, I spend a lot of time crafting custom-detailed battlemaps that not only outline a space for the fight to play out, but also communicate something about the world, and provide the characters the some breathing room for granular, in-world exploration. I strongly believe that the rules only exist in service to the narrative; narrative gameplay doesn't always need a lot of strict rules, but there are situations where a set of restrictions can make the game more dramatic and creatively interesting. I like to walk that line!
