About the adventure

For centuries the mist-shrouded valley of Barovia has suffered under the immortal rule of the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. Now the mists have called you to this land where the sun seems a feeble protection, and the night is full of horrors. You are not the first adventurers to arrive in this accursed valley, but you will be the last, the heroes to free its inhabitants from a blood-sucking tyrant... Right? Mist's Call is a dark tale where victory is hard-fought and far from assured. In this story you will: 🧛🏻Dine with the vampiric Count and his macabre court... without ending up as dinner! ⏳ Delve into the storied past of the valley, reliving the triumphs and tragedies of those heroes and saints of yore. ⚔️Vanquish dreadful monsters and monstrous men, armed with powerful artifacts. 🎭Hold tight to the ideals and people dear to you, and try your best to ignore the tempting whispers of the mist. In a place so defined by despair, one's own fears can be as deadly as any fang. ☀️Laugh! However dark the night might be, it only makes the dawn that much brighter. For all the horrors, there are moments of levity and hope to be found as well! I have a great love for Curse of Strahd, having run it several times. Mist's Call is my own adaptation, drawing upon a wealth of personal and community additions — while still preserving the classic gothic adventure at its core. With years of experience, I am comfortable altering and customizing this tale to you and your character's story. All to say, I offer a vastly different (and better!) experience than someone running Strahd straight out of the book. Whether you are a veteran of the dread domains or dipping your toe into the mists for the first time, all are welcome in Barovia...

About me

Greetings and salutations! I'm Ty, and there are few things I love more than world-building and telling collaborative stories. I got into ttRPG's in high school, and have been playing and running games nonstop for eight years now. I specialize in integrating and weaving your character into the world, and adapting the adventure to match the party and the story you want to tell. In my eight years of experience I've run Curse of Strahd several times, as well as homebrew campaigns in worlds of my own making. Most of the games I've run have been in D&D5e, but I have varying experience with myriad others too (Pathfinder 2e, Knave 2e, Powered by the Apocalypse games, and Alice is Missing to name a few). If you're looking for a game with a focus on narrative and roleplay – where your character actually lives in and impacts the world – I might be the GM for you. I look forward to telling fantastic stories with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

I will send each of you some (optional but useful) character questions and personally check in before session 0 — you don't need to have a character beforehand or even start filling out a sheet, but I find it's helpful to have some ideas going into things. During session 0 we will build up some pre-existing connections between party members and finish character sheets. I will be using D&D Beyond as that's how I can best assist creation, but feel free to use pencil & paper or some other platform if that's what you're comfortable with! If you are new to D&D that's great! I'm happy to work with you on character creation before the campaign and during session 0, as well as getting you comfortable with the system. I can also offer some premade characters if that's more your vibe. This campaign will run from level 1 to 12, though by party consensus we may start at level 3. My preference is for players to use point-buy or standard array for ability scores, but you may roll for them if you'd like — just note that I might ask you to reroll if they are terribly above or below average. Any official species/classes are fine by me and I'm more than happy to work with you if there's some 3rd party/homebrew you want to bring in. Similarly, if you want to use the 2014 version of a species or class that's fine.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A discord account and the ability to engage in voice chat are the only requirements. Having a D&DBeyond and/or Owlbear Rodeo account is highly recommended (both are free and easy to setup) but not strictly necessary. If you have a webcam feel free to have it on or off as you are comfortable.

What Ty brings to the table

I bring over eight years of RPG, writing, and improv experience. I am quick to "yes-and" shenanigans, while still moving the plot forward. I'm most proud of my ability to seamlessly weave your character into the overarching story, integrating your ideas into a living, breathing world. I have a discord server for handouts, voice chat, ambient music, and dice rolling (and memes, of course!). I own all the books you need to make a character in D&D Beyond and the subscription to share them. We will be using Owlbear Rodeo (a lightweight, easy-to-learn virtual tabletop) for maps, though outside of combat encounters the campaign will most often be theater-of-the-mind.

Homebrew rules

The only homebrew rule changes I run by default is drinking potions as a bonus action, but if there are some changes you feel strongly about I'll most likely be happy to implement them. There are also some minor changes to spells specific to Curse of Strahd which I'll go over during session 0. That being said, I have little loyalty to the rules as written and have a penchant to bend the rules to fit the "rule of cool" during sessions 😄

Safety

How Ty creates a safe table

Curse of Strahd is rather infamous for being pretty intense at points, it is a horror campaign after all. However just because your character is going through A Time™ does not mean you need to share in that! I (with your participation) hope to provide a fun and *safe* experience for everyone involved. While CoS deals with dark themes, no single one is completely integral to the story and they can be rewritten or entirely cut out. During session 0 we will establish lines and veils so that I and everyone at the table can be aware of what to minimize or avoid during play. My sessions are on the longer side of things and I will often have a 5-10 minute break around the midpoint — and if I don't, always feel free to ask for one! Similarly, at the end of each session, particularly ones with intense scenes, I'll check in to see how everyone is doing as well as what you liked/would like to see improved. Also! Just because something is not in the lines and veils document does not mean you must grin and bear it if something you are not comfortable with comes up during play. If something does comes up or seems likely to come up during a session please speak up or message in chat and we can retcon, fade-to-black, or simply proceed with caution to avoid sensitive topics. Lines and veils is a living document and can be added to at any time during the campaign.
