About the adventure

Welcome to The Crooked Moon, a chilling folk-horror campaign for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition that will take your characters from humble beginnings at Level 1 to hardened legends by Level 13. This is a story steeped in superstition, ritual, and the creeping dread of a land where every shadow could hide something ancient—and hungry. The campaign unfolds in Druskenvald, a mist-shrouded valley where the sun rarely pierces the clouds and the Crooked Moon looms overhead. Villages cling to survival through whispered charms, hedge magic, and appeasement of the old powers. But the rituals that once kept evil at bay are failing. Strange omens plague the land, crops wither, and something vast and malevolent stirs in the depths of Wickermoor Hollow. Tone & Playstyle: If you enjoy The Witcher, Midsommar, Over the Garden Wall, or The VVitch, you’ll feel right at home here. Expect moral ambiguity, tense social encounters, survival elements, and dungeon delves dripping with atmosphere. Combat will be deadly but fair, puzzles and mysteries will reward creative thinking, and character choices will have lasting consequences—both mechanical and narrative.

About me

From a humble beginning as a family Dungeon Master to running multiple games professionally each week, my journey with Dungeons & Dragons has been nothing short of magical. What started as a fun way to bond with loved ones has transformed into a deep passion for storytelling, world-building, and guiding players through epic adventures. I may be a newer DM, but I’ve already racked up countless sessions, learning and refining my craft with each roll of the dice. My experience spans from intimate family games to engaging diverse groups of players online, and I’m thrilled to bring my creative energy and enthusiasm to every table I join. Join me on an adventure, and let’s make some unforgettable memories!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation begins before Session 0, with final touches completed between Session 0 and Session 1. We’ll use Session 0 to discuss character concepts, integrate them into the world of Druskenvald, and establish party dynamics. You may use either Point Buy or Standard Array for stats. We’re using D&D 5e (2024 rules), starting at 1st level with normal starting equipment. Characters will be built on D&D Beyond and imported into Foundry VTT for play. All official D&D content and The Crooked Moon player options are available, with the exception of Spelljammer and Lord of the Rings material, which does not fit this setting. Each player will also choose a Thread—a personal narrative tethered to the omens, superstitions, and folk tales of Druskenvald. Threads will provide unique side quests, allies, enemies, and rewards tied directly to your backstory. These may foreshadow future events, tempt you with dangerous bargains, or challenge your beliefs about what is true and what is myth.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be using Foundry for our Virtual Tabletop and Discord for voice chat. So make sure you have an account on Discord. Foundry just requires a browser so no need to make an account for that. Last but not least, make sure to make a D&DBeyond account for creating your characters. A decent mic is preferred and I will be on camera during session, but it is not required by any means!

What Ethan Huffman brings to the table

My extensive D&D Beyond library is at your service, and I'm happy to acquire any additional content you need to bring your perfect character to life. Our adventures unfold in the immersive environment of Foundry VTT, where detailed battle maps bring each location to stunning life, all enhanced by carefully curated ambient soundscapes that transport us directly into the world. As a DM I love to I cultivate those magical moments where breaking the rules feels special precisely because we respect them the rest of the time. Every bend in the rules is earned, making those cinematic moments all the more memorable.

Homebrew rules

Perishable Inspiration. I will be giving out an inspiration to the party for doing the weekly recap, however, this is to be used in that same session. Other inspiration will act as normal. Healing potions as a bonus action. Regular potions remain a full action, but any healing potion can be drunk as a bonus action. You can choose to use a full action for that potion to gain the full amount of hit points back. Flanking! +2 to hit in melee if you have an ally on the opposite side of the creature you’re intending to hit. Forced Skill Checks. If a PC fails a skill check they can attempt it again. Failing this could result in unforeseen consequences. Grim Hollow Transformations. I will explain these more in Session 0. You can let me know if a transformation does not appeal to you. Pushed Skill Check. If you fail a skill check but truly desire to pass it, you can push it. This lets you roll again, however if you fail something could go wrong. I am open to any other homebrew rules that folks would like to incorporate!

Safety

How Ethan Huffman creates a safe table

We will build our characters prior to session 0 and then confirm backstories and character ideas during session 0. My door is always open for any questions you may have during this process, but also there will be spots for questions during session 0. We will go over the consent checklist during session 0, as well. There will be a 10 minute break around halfway through the session each session for bio-breaks and such, and at the end of each session we will do Stars and Wishes.
