About the adventure

The world you know is but a sliver of reality. When shadows lengthen and whispers rise from forgotten woods, the shroud thins and an ancient evil stirs in the realm of Druskenvald. Here, folklore isn't just tradition; it’s a way of life. This is a realm shaped by fear and superstition, where morality is twisted and power is often bought with blood or bargains. Welcome to The Crooked Moon, a folk horror setting for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. This campaign challenges players to abandon heroic idealism and embrace uncertainty, suspicion, and temptation. Will your party endure the horrors that lurk in hedge and hollow, or will they be consumed by them? This is a beginner friendly campaign beginning at level 3 and ending at level 14, with the potential to go to level 20.

About me

Dungeons and Dragons DM with a taste for horror and the macabre. I like to run haunted houses and cult related campaigns but I also do fun light hearted adventures or general hero stuff. I take great care to know my players before we start a session and I do use safety tools if need be for more intense campaigns. I look forward to playing with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will take place during our individual session 0 before players join the next scheduled game. Players will need to create their character on Alchemy, a link to the correct game will be posted once players join. Individual starting level will depend on when you join the campaign but the level we are starting the campaign at is level 3. We use Standard Array or Point Buy for stat assignment. Once in Alchemy, character options (species, sub-classes, feats, items and spells) will be provided for the Dungeons and Dragons module The Crooked Moon by me. If players have access to the module and player options on other platforms or via a physical copy they are welcome to read through the players guide. Players may also use any other official sub-classes and races from other D&D publications. I am also open to homebrew sub-classes and items but they will need to be submitted for review before hand so that I can determine if they are game breaking or not.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need to create an Alchemy RPG account before hand, They can do that here: https://alchemyrpg.com You may also want to download the Alchemy app for a better experience, although it can also be used in your browser if you prefer not having to download anything. You'll also need a Discord account, to join the community server and campaigns rooms I have set up, a microphone, a note book, snacks and your charming self. Optionally you can also use your webcam, and have physical dice if you prefer to roll that way. You can use fidget toys if you need but cell phones are discouraged at the table. We respect each others time and participation in session.

What Joannah Stewart brings to the table

As your DM, I bring not only stories, but experiences. I offer: - Atmosphere & Immersion: I bring rich narratives and immersion through, music, imagery, dynamic NPCs, and unsettling secrets. - Player-Centric Storytelling: Your characters drive the story. I incorporate backstories, ambitions, and wishes to make sessions more personal. - Dark Whimsy & Folk Horror Flavor. - Choices That Matter: I love giving players dilemmas that test ethics and force growth. It's not just about winning—it's about changing. - Flexible Mechanics & Rule of Cool: I adapt rules to serve drama, pacing, and creativity. If an idea’s cool? Let’s make it work. - Collaborative Energy: I listen, adjust, and evolve the campaign with my players. It’s a team effort—we’re building a story together.

Homebrew rules

House Rules 1 . Drinking a potion is a bonus action, pouring it down someone else's throat is an action. 2. Critical Hits and Fumbles: When a player rolls a natural 20 on an attack roll, they roll double the dice. Conversely, when a player rolls a natural 1, they automatically miss. 3. Nat 1’s on all attack *may* incur some form of disadvantage (if it fits the narrative and is funny or useful, for example, a nat 1 on an athletics to climb a tree may result in falling and twisting your ankle so you can only move at 1/2 movement until the next short rest). 4. Everyone levels at the same time by milestone. 5. Players use standard array or point buy for character creation. 6. Help action. Only one player may roll to attempt an outcome for the party like disarming a trap. They may receive “help” from another player if that player is proficient in the relevant skill. The first player gets advantage on their roll. 7. Whatever players can do, the DM can do too.

Safety

How Joannah Stewart creates a safe table

Alchemy has it's own x-card alert system and you can message me privately during games at any time on Discord or Alchemy. I provide a Lines and Veils sheet during session 0 and there are Lines and Veils options on your Alchemy account that get added to the groups Lines and Veils in the game. Bleed discussions and aftercare are at the request of players . I try not to cut into play time, or keep my players too long after sessions if they do not feel they need to discuss anything. I respect my players time and their comfort, they are always welcome to message me about anything they feel uncomfortable with or have questions about.
