Creating your character

🐎 How to Create Your Character Character creation will take place before the game begins, with discussion and collaboration encouraged in a dedicated channel. This is a play-by-post game on Discord, and we’ll take our time to ensure characters feel meaningful, connected to the world, and ready to grow into legends. 📜 Starting Point Level: 1 Stats: Standard Array or Point Buy (your choice) Hit Points: Max at Level 1 Sources: Official published content from 5E and the newer 2024 edition is allowed. If you want to try something unusual just ask. 🌾 Tone & Background This is a mythic pastoral campaign focused on cultural identity, lost traditions, and the quiet heroism of wandering people. Characters may be clanfolk, lorekeepers, scouts, spirit-touched wanderers, or outsiders with ties to the Shaar's forgotten stories. There will be plenty of room to explore personal arcs and character-driven side stories alongside the main plot. Characters don’t need to know each other at first—but we’ll work together to tie you into the setting, the nomadic culture of the Shaar, and the mystery of the vanishing herds. 🐾 Where & How Character sheets will be created using D&DBeyond in Discord. We'll handle introductions, character goals, and bonds through pre-game side scenes and in-character chats before the campaign begins.

🌾 How to Prepare for Tides of the Forgotten Herd Before we step into the open skies of the Shaar, here are a few things you’ll need to do to get ready: 🪶 1. Join the Discord Server All roleplay, narration, and downtime scenes will take place via Discord in a structured, channel-based format. Once accepted, you’ll receive an invite to the campaign server. Be ready to introduce yourself and your character in the appropriate channels! 📖 2. Create Your Character on D&D Beyond We’ll use D&D Beyond for all character sheets. 📍 3. Get Familiar with Owlbear Rodeo (Optional) We’ll use Owlbear Rodeo for shared maps and exploration moments. No installation needed—just a browser. You’ll receive links when maps are used, and I’ll guide you through what you need to know. 🌿 4. Read the Welcome & Setting Info There will be short lore primers and tone-setting posts pinned in the Discord. This will help you understand the world, themes, and the kind of stories we’re telling in Tides of the Forgotten Herd—mythic, heartfelt, and steeped in memory. 🗺️ 5. Be Ready to Collaborate Character backstories don’t need to be long, but they should connect to the world. You’ll get the chance to tie into other PCs, the Seven Sacred Herds, or a specific clan or mystery. Prompts and questions will help guide you!

Your backstory isn’t just flavor—it will shape the world and the arc of the campaign. Expect your history to come back in unexpected and meaningful ways. Deep relationships and emotional stakes. I value strong player bonds, rivalries, loyalties, and complicated feelings that make the story feel real. Rules-light when it makes things cooler. I follow the rules where they help us, but I happily invoke the Rule of Cool when it serves drama, character, or myth. Cinematic narration and written immersion. Homebrew rules

Tides of the Forgotten Herd uses mostly standard 5E rules—with a focus on narrative flow, character moments, and meaningful choices. I prefer to keep things simple and only introduce homebrew rules when they serve the story or improve the pacing of play-by-post. 🌾 What to Expect: Rulings over rules: I make fair, story-driven calls as needed. If a rule slows down momentum or doesn’t make sense in context, I’ll adjust. Cinematic flexibility: I’ll sometimes allow creative actions, combo moves, or Rule of Cool moments when they make the story better. Play-by-post pacing: Small adjustments (like clarifying reactions, group stealth checks, or flexible initiative order) may be made to keep things flowing smoothly. Optional mechanics: As the campaign evolves, I may introduce lightweight homebrew features tied to themes like memory, legacy, or spirit magic—with full discussion beforehand. You're always welcome to suggest a cool idea or ask for a ruling. The goal is to make the game fun, fair, and full of unforgettable moments.
