About the adventure

On the day of the princess' wedding, what was supposed to be a happy celebration turned into an apocalyptic purge. The King's city has fallen to a powerful necromancer who has waited lifetimes and centuries to exact his revenge. Now, the only way to stop him lies with our adventurers. The quest before them is one that will span the world and test the moral fiber of their being. Will they succeed, or will they lose themselves in the dark riddle that awaits them? This is a mean and difficult campaign with a villain who is prepared for the party. This is not a stereotypical campaign plot. Party unity is a must. No murder hobos. Role-playing not Roll-playing. This will not be a short game. How fast the players progress is based on them. The game has a detail in it that enables players to join at any point in the adventure and it doesn't matter what session number it is when you sign up. Yes, this uses an older version of Dungeons and Dragons. Join up and rewind the clock whether you are a veteran of this edition or new to it. Either way, you won't be disappointed! In regards to the content warning, some of them are going to be present because of the game world or genre of the game. Others might be present and are listed just in case, but are not absolutely guaranteed to be present.

About me

I have been a player and game master for several games for over 30 years. I have a home-brew background as well as a published TTRPG background. I tend to stick with older games, as I am often not fond of the newer versions. My style is partially scripted and partially off-the-cuff. I tend to be tough, but I always try to be fair. I'm not perfect and I do make mistakes. If I make one, let me know and I will rectify it. I have been know to chuck rules I don't like, or at least modify them (and make you know about them up front!) so that they are less unfavorable. I want my players to feel challenged, but still have fun. I prefer role-playing and not roll-playing. I am cool with new players and veterans. I stick to older editions of multiple games mainly because I actually prefer them over the newer editions as opposed to being too cheap to upgrade. That said, I am not above running a game in an edition I am not fond of, but I tend to charge more for it as the trade off.

Character creation

Creating your character

Starting character level is 3. Multi-classing is allowed. Dual-classing is discouraged. I prefer only the basic 6 PHB PC races for the sake of ease. No psionics. No custom classes/kits. Due to the level of difficulty of the campaign, there are numerous "house rules" that will be in effect. I apologize for not listing them here, as it is easier for me to tell them to you in character creation, to try and type them out. While aspects of some of the custom rules will be inspired by the Skills and Powers system, do not use Skills and Powers to build your character.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Since this is on Roll20 and Discord, a microphone is a must. If you choose to have your webcam on, that's up to you. While I would prefer players to already know this edition of the game, I will teach it to you if it comes to it. But please know, you will be expected to catch on and remember what it is that I teach you. If you have the books already, perfect. If you don't, I will have them open and ready to be used. You can use your own dice or use Roll20's dice roller. Your call, I'm not picky, but I expect honesty in your rolls. Come on, this is a game, and fudging your rolls has no point. I would prefer a copy of your character sheet at the start that I can update with you, just for my own records.

What JP McClendon brings to the table

I will be using the dice roller on Roll20. I will draw maps and layouts as we go to set the physical scene.

Homebrew rules

There are numerous homebrew rules in play designed to assist the player characters due to the level of difficulty the party will face over the course of the campaign. They are far too numerous to fully list here, so they will be covered during character creation.

All listed trigger warnings are potential, but not a guarantee. At the end of each and every game session, players will be asked by the DM if there was anything found to be triggering or offensive to make sure that nothing occurred that might upset or offend. Obviously, if any content is triggering, it is not intentional. Also obviously, if a player is triggered by something they need not wait until the post-session wrap up to let me know.
