About the adventure

This adventure takes place in the world of Greyhawk, one of D&D’s oldest and richest settings. You’ll begin in the elven realm of Celene, under the rule of Queen Yolande, and travel to the ruined Temple of Elemental Evil — a place long associated with dark rituals, ancient cults, and elemental chaos. While this is a standalone mission, Greyhawk veterans will find familiar names and factions woven into the background. The tone of this one-shot is tense and dangerous, with infiltration, sabotage, and cult activity at its core. Players will need to use both their blades and their brains — deception can open doors that brute force might not. You’ll start in disguise, pretending to be initiates of the para-elemental cults, but how long you maintain the ruse is up to you. This is a balanced session with a mix of exploration, combat, and roleplay. I don’t run games that are all one thing — you’ll get a bit of everything: tactical decisions, a few chances to act or lie your way through a situation, and a solid, dramatic boss fight to cap it off. Expect a mix of challenge and cinematic payoff. All players are welcome!

About me

I’ve been DMing for about 20 years now, and I like to think I’ve learned a lot in that time — but maybe not. Let no DM fool you: no matter how much we prepare or how creative we are, players are unpredictable, and the best of us learn to roll with the punches. I like to think I do that well. I craft stories and build worlds, but at the heart of it, it’s about reading the table and making sure everyone is having a good time. And I do all of that while immersing you in a world of magic and monsters, where you help tell a story of fantastical heroes and incredible journeys. This is a craft to me — one I’ve spent years practicing with all kinds of players from all walks of life. Maybe I’m not a master of anything, but I can tell a good story and create moments that linger long after the session ends.

Character creation

Creating your character

Create a level 4 character using anything available in the D&D Beyond Marketplace. That means anything I have in my library is fair game — and if you’ve purchased additional books, you’re welcome to use those too. Whether it’s 2014 rules or the 2024 updates, it’s all good. This is a one-shot, so build what you’ll enjoy playing. Use Point Buy or Standard Array for your ability scores — no rolling for stats. If you enjoy writing character backstories, keep it to at least a paragraph and no more than a page. It probably won’t come into play directly, but I love reading them, and I do take characters seriously — even in one-shots. And who knows? One-shots sometimes turn into something more. So have fun, get creative, and build with the future in mind.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need access to Discord, D&D Beyond, and D&D Beyond Maps, which we’ll use as our virtual tabletop during the game. I’ll send invites to the Discord server and the D&D Beyond campaign after you book your spot. Please have a working mic and headphones, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space to play. Webcam is optional but welcome. You’ll create your level 4 character on D&D Beyond before the game — full character creation guidelines are provided after booking, and I’m happy to review your build or answer any questions.

What Kayden Kai brings to the table

I’m decent with voices, and I spend time curating music that fits the mood of each scene. I try to make combat feel vivid with imaginative visual descriptions that help everyone picture what’s happening without slowing the pace. I respect the rules as written, but I also reward creativity. If you try something cinematic or clever, I’ll work with you to make it land. My style is about balance: immersive storytelling, solid roleplay moments, meaningful decisions, and satisfying encounters — without getting bogged down in any one element.

Safety

How Kayden Kai creates a safe table

If there’s anything that specifically triggers you, just let me know before the session and I’ll make sure it’s excluded — or I’ll let the group know that topic is off-limits for this adventure. During play, if anything comes up that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to step away and send me a message. I’ll pause and address it right away. My goal is to make sure everyone feels comfortable and safe at the table. After the session, we’ll do a quick debrief using Stars and Wishes — a chance to share what you enjoyed and anything you’d like to see handled differently in the future.
