Nine Hells: The Devil's Progeny (Game 4)

Nine Hells: The Devil's Progeny (Game 4)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Life in the Nine Hells is not as harsh as some would think, to some. To others, with less constitution and guile, the Nine Hells can be just as unforgiving as one might imagine. Scarred by desolate landscapes and limited resources, only a strong soul thrives in these domains. You are being held in the High Lord's most secure prison, the Dungeon of Penance. The slick black walls of this reformatory return distorted reflections of all light cast upon them. Shadows stretch from the corners as if alive and seeking to devour whatever they touch. You're not sure how long you've been held here. There is something strange about this place, something in the air that numbs the senses and causes time to list slowly by while also seemingly to skip in places. What you do know is the pain you're subject to. The daily "Penance" that your jailer's seek to extract from your flesh. It's a price you pay in screams and torment. You're not sure when it started, or if your going crazy, but you almost crave the subtle moments when that sweet voice whispers in your mind. He says his name is Diniel, and his voice is serene and soothing... Even if it's only your imagination. Diniel speaks to you in your times of greatest woe, to help ease your pains. He speaks of a time coming soon where you will walk free of your shackles again. His words are uplifting and hopeful, they give you the courage to forge your own destiny. Diniel has spoken to you, revealing that you are not the only one seeking a new fate. That he has spoken to other special individuals like you who together may be able to break your chains. He says to look for the sign, that will tell you who you can trust. This campaign is designed to start at level 3 and progress as far as level 20 depending on how the story goes. After the intro quest, each player character will be gifted with a custom magical boon that will grow in power as the character progresses.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

For Discord, I prefer for all of my players to have a webcam and a headset (to reduce noise), but a microphone will do with push-to-talk. An account on D&D Beyond and Forge VTT will be required.

What I provide

I host the game on Foundry VTT via the forge. I also host a Discord server for voice and video. I supply a plethora of both official and homebrewed content on D&D Beyond, which is also where I host all of my character sheets. I want to set the line properly, I am not a professional voice actor. However, I do try my best with fun character voices. Also, I do not currently own royalty free music to play, but that will be rectified in the near future. You should all know that the combat in this campaign, being set in the nine hells, is going to be tough and tactical. I'll keep it simple'ish for the first few bouts, but it will be a steep curve from there. I do promise it will be balanced; hard, but balanced. Lastly, the rule of cool will almost always win out at my table. So if there is something interesting you want to try that makes sense with your character then speak up! Let's work together to have fun, because that's what this is all about after all.

Gameplay details

First off, Session 0 will be free for all players! During this session we will be rolling character stats and Hit Points; as well as, going over both player and DM expectations and our lines and veils document. As for our other safety tools, we will take a break about halfway through each session and engage in a 15-minute aftercare moment at the conclusion of each session as well.

How will character creation work

You will receive a link to the D&D Beyond campaign in your welcome email. Please use this link to create your basic level 3 character before Session 0. I accept just about all D&D 5th Edition compatible content, and have a plethora of official release and homebrew of my own. If there is something you want to use that I do not have, simply share it and we can discuss it!
