Faerie Tale: Shadows Beyond Ravening (Game 2)

Faerie Tale: Shadows Beyond Ravening (Game 2)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

The Ravening War is by far the bloodiest and most horrific that has ever been recorded in the histories of the Faewild. The war itself was short lived, lasting only but a few months measured by the standard passage of time; however, the nightmares resulting from its conclusion echo years later. So dramatic as the political shift has been since the end of the war, the truth is day to day life amongst the Fae hasn't changed much. The tradesmen still craft, the merchants still barter, the artists still perform; the Fae, it seems, are too tough to allow the gift of their long lives to be tainted by un-invited darkness. The Vafi'Blót is a year-long festival that is celebrated as Ævi'Hjól passes across the center of The Weilderûn, massive ancient jungle of primal - untamed magic. The aetheric currents which surge in this verdant overgrowth are potent enough on their own; but when mixed with the blessings of The Everstream as they are distilled from Vëildrâsil above, truly powerful manifestations of magic are possible. The Fae use the empowered energies during this festival to renew their domains and further their pursuits. For many it is a time of creation and discovery; for others its a time of opportunity and profit. Above all else, the zenith of this festival - when the excitement of the aether can be felt vibrating in the air - marks the greatest embodiment of the great cycle, as Vëildrâsil produces a single seed. A portent of new birth as the seed of a new world tree is released into The Everstream to be planted somewhere in the cosmos. It's here, at the beginning of this festival that our tale begins. Here, among the boisterous streets of Allr'TingVé, where the Fae of this story know not the destiny that lies before them... Our players will explore the Faewild in this High Fantasy campaign where I will customize special magic items for each player that will grow in potency as the players level up. This campaign is designed to start at level 3 and will go as high as level 20 depending on how the story progresses. I tailor content for the current level of the players so that they are challenged appropriately. There is a lot of adventure and exploration included in this campaign. Along with some political intrigue and mystery as well.

How to prepare

For Discord, I like for all of my players to use a webcam and mic (preferably a headset to eliminate excess noise). Players will need online accounts for D&D Beyond and The Forge VTT. Basic character creation should be done ahead of time, with the exception of stats and hit points.

What I provide

First things first, Rule of Cool will almost always win out at my table. If you can find an interesting rules loop-hole or if you want to do something that challenges the rule book that is fun and makes sense for your character, let's find a way to make it work together! I bring the Forge / Foundry VTT for our gaming experience, and utilize Discord as well. I have a subscription with Mythweaver for higher quality AI generated token art, or you can supply your own! I also own most of the content available on D&D Beyond, which I use for all of my character sheets. I am not a voice actor by any means, but I do try with interesting character voices. I tend to focus more on interesting roleplay than hardcore extended combat. I like my encounters to be meaningful to the story.

Gameplay details

Before any game play is to commence, we run a detailed Session 0 where we discuss heavily the needs of the group. Before this session I will hand out a Lines and Veils questionnaire for players to fill out so that I know what topics to discuss. During the game we will take a break about half-way through to recharge our batteries. As well as an after-care moment at the conclusion of every session to ensure everyone is taking the requisite steps to take care of themselves mentally and physically.

How will character creation work

I like for the majority of character creation to be handled before Session 0; however, I do like to start the Session 0 by rolling stats and hit dice. I have a unique formula for rolling hit dice: the player rolls 4d6 and drops the lowest, re-rolling 1's. I then roll a secret d8. The player can choose to replace one of their 3 dice with my secret d8! It's a gamble, but results in very diverse and interesting stat sets. Of course, if a player doesn't like what they rolled, they can always choose to go with the standard array. I utilize D&D Beyond for all of my character sheets because its where I host my absolute plethora of homebrew content. All of my players start their characters at level 3! I like for everyone to have their subclass chosen and ready to go for the first session. I allow almost all content for D&D 5th Edition, including sourcebooks not hosted on D&D Beyond (I can always add it to my homebrew stack online). If you find something interesting you wanna use, show me and we can work it out!
