The Drowned World | ages 18+
Apocalypse World 2e | One-Shot
About the adventure
Welcome to the drowned world. A planet dominated by one enormous ocean, a dark, treacherous, angry ocean. To the north, the soul storm rages eternally, to the south, nothing but biting winds and creeping ice. The remnants of humanity have been scattered, crammed into tiny islands, if they're lucky, or roaming the seas if they aren't. Chances of survival in this doomed world are bleak at best. But humanity carries on. The twelve most populated islands have formed Kingdoms. Each producing something vital the rest need, thus maintaining a tentative peace. But nothing lasts, leaders get power hungry, cultists long to spread the word of their gods both new and dead, and a hidden thirteenth kingdom, long thought a myth, is making itself heard once more. Can you survive? The Drowned World is a fully open world, sandbox experience. Players will select their starting Kingdoms, and see where the story takes them from there. Each character's actions and choices will influence the world and narrative, meaning no two groups will get the story. Will your character stay in their kingdom, rise to the top, and take control? Will they sail the high seas in search of treasure and glory? Will they study the secret history of this world, discovering the origins of the angry ocean, the soul storm, and the mysterious thirteenth kingdom? An whichever path they choose, will they be able to survive long enough to see their story through? For fans of open world games, narrative role play, dark and gritty stories, and One Piece; the drowned world is the perfect setting for your next campaign.

How to prepare
Players should all have working mics and, ideally, functional cameras. The game works best when we can all see each other, although I understand if that is difficult or uncomfortable, so it is not required. Players should have a Zoom account. The free version will work perfectly fine, but I will only accept players into the meetings, so please have your name set to match your name on startplaying Players will need their character sheets, paper and pencil, and a pair of six-sided dice. Most importantly, they will need to prepare a character they will have fun playing, both in terms of mechanics and role-play!
What I provide
I will provide a fully drawn and flushed out map of the Drowned World, as well as character sheet PDFs and the rule book for Apocalypse World 2E. Ambient music is difficult over a virtual medium, but there will be distinct voices for every NPC encountered. Apocalypse World's combat is simple and straightforward, and will only come into play if the characters seek it out. As with most Powered by the Apocalypse games, the Rule of Cool and the Role of Narrative rule all. Given that statement, this world is darker, grittier, and more dangerous than most, and while players are welcome to do and try anything, they must be aware that all actions have consequences, sometimes even deadly ones...
Gameplay details
I use a session 0 in all of my campaigns, and especially when entering new groups. This gives me a chance to get to know everyone, and to establish other mental health safety concerns and techniques that I have used both as a GM and teacher/educator. Session 0 is also vital to my understanding of the type of story the group wants to tell moving forward. All sessions are virtual, and so private messaging on Zoom/Discord is the primary tool for X cards, while N and O cards can be more public. My primary focus is on you, your characters, and how to best tell the story your group wants. This can't be done if events in the story cause actual real world pain through triggers of trauma. My job as your Narrator, is to curate a story that you will enjoy and get fulfillment from, and part of that includes keeping the environment safe for everyone.

How will character creation work
We will work on character creation during the second half of session 0, though players will be expected to select their Archetype and have some idea of the kind of character they want to role play. The character sheets are very simple and straightforward, and while they'll be able to fill out most on their own, there are sections we will need to fill out as a group together.
