Pokémon: Origins of Champions
Mutants and Masterminds (3e) | Campaign
About the adventure
Pokémon: Origins of Champions is a tabletop RPG adventure set in the Pokémon world’s early days, where the regions of Kanto and beyond are still wild, full of mystery, and largely uncharted. Using the flexible Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition system, players will step into the role of new Trainers taking their first bold steps toward greatness — a time when Gym Leaders are only beginning to establish their legends, and the dream of becoming a Pokémon Master is just starting to spark in the hearts of the brave. In this game, your Trainer and your Pokémon grow together. Your starting companion will be your steadfast ally, represented with full powers and abilities that evolve as your bond deepens. You’ll capture new Pokémon, develop your team, and customize your abilities in a system that lets you blend creative builds with faithful adaptations of Pokémon battling. Players will earn rewards through exploration, battling, and uncovering secrets, using power points to improve both their Trainers and their Pokémon partners over time. Your first Pokémon matters — but your journey is far more than just the starting point. Expect a campaign filled with exploration, challenges, and moral choices. You’ll trek through ancient forests, scale mist-covered mountains, and sail across glittering seas — uncovering forgotten temples, battling wild Pokémon, and encountering rival Trainers with ambitions just as fierce as your own. Gym Battles are major milestones, treated as high-stakes duels of strategy, teamwork, and personal growth. Every badge won brings you closer to becoming a legend in your own right. But danger grows in the shadows. Team Rocket, still in its earliest and most volatile days, moves quietly behind the scenes, seeking to exploit Pokémon for profit and power. Players will uncover conspiracies, confront Rocket agents, and make critical decisions about how far they are willing to go to protect the bond between humans and Pokémon. Some missions may push players to the edge of their ideals — not every choice will be easy, and the cost of victory may not always be measured in badges alone. This game is designed to capture the spirit of classic Pokémon storytelling — a mixture of heartwarming companionship, thrilling adventure, and real stakes lurking beneath the surface. Players can expect a balance of battle-heavy sessions, character-driven moments, mysteries to solve, and opportunities to forge lifelong rivalries and alliances. Whether you’re battling your way through a regional tournament, protecting a village from a rampaging wild Pokémon, or standing up against a criminal organization, your choices will shape the world around you. (Games scheduled Earlier in the day are currently testing to see how favorable earlier time slots will be. Expect games earlier in the A.M. to be started a few weeks after slots are filled.)

How to prepare
Preparing for Pokémon: Origins of Champions is simple and designed to help you step smoothly into the world of adventure. You don’t need to be an expert in Mutants & Masterminds 3E — a basic understanding of character structure (Abilities, Skills, Advantages, Powers, and Defenses) will be helpful, and I’ll be available to guide you through the system. Before Session 0, think about the kind of Trainer you want to play: what drives them to take this journey? Are they seeking fame, knowledge, strength, or simply adventure? A full backstory isn’t necessary yet, but having a basic concept will make character creation easier and help connect you to the world. You’ll also want to choose a Starter Pokémon to accompany you at the beginning of your journey. Classic options like Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Pikachu will be available, and you’ll have some room to customize their traits to make your companion unique. Starter templates will be provided, but if you have a particular idea in mind for a custom starter that fits the setting, feel free to bring it to Session 0 for discussion. Since we will be using Roll20 for character sheets, battle maps, and visuals, and Discord for voice communication and session updates, make sure you have access to both platforms ahead of time. Testing your microphone and checking your internet stability before we begin will help keep sessions running smoothly. A brief setup session before our first meeting can also be arranged if you need technical support. Players should also come ready to collaborate and support one another. While rivalries and personal ambition are natural parts of the Pokémon world, this story will be built on cooperation, respect, and shared growth. Everyone’s story matters, and working together will make the experience richer for all. We will also be using safety tools such as Lines and Veils, the Open Door policy, and regular Breaks to maintain a comfortable, respectful environment. These will be covered during Session 0, and players will have the opportunity to privately or publicly voice any boundaries or concerns at any time. In short: come with an open mind, a sense of wonder, and a readiness to bring your Trainer’s journey to life. With preparation, imagination, and teamwork, Pokémon: Origins of Champions will be a world where your actions truly shape the story we create together.

Gameplay details
Creating a fun, engaging, and welcoming environment is essential for this campaign. While Pokémon: Origins of Champions focuses on adventure, discovery, and friendship, there may also be intense moments of danger, competition, or emotional stakes. To ensure everyone has a great experience, the following safety tools will be in place: Breaks Each session will include a scheduled break roughly halfway through the game, giving players time to rest, recharge, and reset. Additionally, players are always welcome to ask for an unscheduled break at any time for any reason; whether to step away, regroup after a heavy scene, or simply pause the action. Just let me know in chat or with a quick message if you need one, and we’ll take care of it without question or pressure. Lines and Veils To ensure a safe and comfortable narrative space, we will establish a list of Lines (hard limits) and Veils (topics that can appear but will be handled off-screen or with a lighter touch) during Session 0. Examples might include: • Lines: No graphic depictions of harm to Pokémon or minors, no sexual violence, no extreme cruelty. • Veils: Rival battles that may get intense but will not result in permanent harm, emotional consequences for Pokémon will be handled gently, darker moments fade to black. Players are encouraged to suggest Lines and Veils privately or openly during Session 0, and they can be updated at any time during the campaign. Respecting these boundaries is non-negotiable, they exist to ensure that all players feel safe and respected. Open Door Policy At any time, for any reason, any player can leave a session without needing to explain why. Whether due to discomfort, real-life obligations, or simply needing a break, players are trusted to take care of themselves. No judgment, no pressure, no penalties. If a player needs to step away temporarily or permanently, accommodations will be made to smoothly integrate or pause their character without stress. Session 0 Before the first full session, we will host a Session 0 where we will: • Introduce player characters and Pokémon starters. • Discuss the overall tone and style of the game. • Establish Lines, Veils, and player comfort zones. • Explain key house rules (e.g., type effectiveness tweaks, bond systems). • Review safety tools and how to use them actively during play. • Confirm communication channels (voice, chat, how to signal discomfort if needed). • Align expectations on character goals, rivalry dynamics, and group cooperation. Session 0 is a collaborative and open space. It’s where we build trust, align expectations, and create the foundation for an incredible journey together. In short: This game is meant to celebrate adventure, friendship, and heroic spirit, not to create real-world stress. Everyone at the table deserves to feel safe, heard, and excited to play. Let’s make sure Pokémon: Origins of Champions is a journey we’re proud to embark on…together!

How will character creation work
Character creation is your first step into the world of Pokémon: Origins of Champions. In this campaign, you will create a Pokémon Trainer who is just beginning their journey, along with your first Pokémon partner. We will be using the Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition system to build Trainers and their Pokémon in a way that allows for growth, evolution, and unique playstyles. Here’s what to expect during the process: Step 1: Concept Start by imagining the kind of Trainer you want to play. Are you a rookie bursting with excitement? A serious competitor? A researcher hoping to uncover ancient mysteries? Think about your Trainer’s background, their goals, and what drives them forward. Step 2: Trainer Build • Power Level: Trainers are built at PL 6 with 90 Power Points. • Focus: Your Trainer’s stats reflect their physical capabilities, skills, and talents. Early on, your Trainer won’t be a combat powerhouse, your Pokémon companions will handle most battles but over time, you may develop defensive moves, Trainer-based perks, or tactical advantages. • Skills and Advantages: Invest in skills that suit your character’s concept: Pokémon Handling (Animals), Medicine (for healing Pokémon), Athletics, Insight, Persuasion, Technology (Pokédex or capture gear), and others. • Optional: If you wish to eventually battle personally (such as through commanding devices, simple defensive gear, or light Trainer-based moves), we will discuss how to build it within the system respectfully to the game’s tone. Step 3: Choose Your Starter Pokémon • You will choose your starting Pokémon: Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Pikachu, or an approved custom starter fitting the world. • Your Pokémon companion will be built using the Summon effect (Heroic, Controlled) and treated as an independent entity on the field. • Starter Pokémon are designed at PL 6, roughly equivalent to your Trainer, and have their own powers, attacks, and abilities. • You will build your Pokémon using provided templates as a foundation, with some room for personalization. Step 4: Customize • Decide on small details that make your character and Pokémon feel distinct: clothing style, battle catchphrases, favorite Pokéball type, battle strategy, etc. • You may select a minor “Bond Trait” for your Pokémon, representing a quirk or hidden potential, which can evolve during the campaign (such as “Brave,” “Clever,” “Loyal,” etc.). Step 5: Final Review We will review your Trainer and Starter Pokémon builds together before the first session to ensure balance, consistency with the setting, and readiness for play. I’ll be available to assist with Mutants & Masterminds rules interpretation and help new players through the building process on Roll20 or over Discord if needed.
