About the adventure

More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path. A powerful horde of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost. For centuries, rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around Phandalin, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine. Until now! Greetings, This will be an introductory game of 5TH Edition 2014 Dungeons & Dragons. Introductory in that while I have over 40 years of D&D experience, most of that experience is in 1E & 2E AD&D, This will also be my first attempt at running any game here on SPG. I am not a complete newbie to 5E and you don't have to be a newbie to enjoy this game, but understand that I am going to run things out of the basic 5E players handbook for starting races and classes, at first. As I get to know players and their playstyle and they get to know me and mine, I will quite willing to modify or manipulate classes and races to turn things into a more custom experience. In the way you might use a good frozen pizza and spice it up with your own favorite ingredients to make it something special, I do use 'pre-canned' modules like this to provide a framework to explore or experiment and make its world mine. Even if you have played The Lost Mines of Phandelver before. I can pretty much assure you that this experience will not be a carbon copy of your other playthroughs. Thank You Az

About me

Born in a snowbank and raised in a swamp, I grew up in a family that liked playing and inventing fun games to occupy our time. I started hanging around my older brothers D&D table when I was 7 years old, by 8 I was playing a character given to my by his DM (Nikintuk the gnome illusionist) by the time I was 13 I was already GM'ing for my own group of friends and have pretty much been the 'forever DM' since. I am now retired from truck driving for health reasons and am looking to have some fun playing or running some D&D games.

Character creation

Creating your character

I would prefer that players meet with me on Discord and Roll20 to discuss and create characters prior to the actual start of the game. Various methods of creation are allowed but i encourage and reward players for using my 'Ironman' method which attempts to replicate your being born into a world with out a choice in your genetics but allows you to proceed through life on your own terms. If that sounds a little cryptic..it is. Come join us and see how it works!

The current party

Current main characters are a human viking warrior level 4, a dragonborn forge cleric level 4 and a human dragon sorceress who focuses on ice/lightning at level 4. Each of them have backup characters within the world as well.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I would prefer that players have a working microphone and are able to use Discord and Roll20. I may also hand out information or other items in PDF format so AdobeDC or something similar would be advised. Players need not be completely conversant with all the rules as I am willing to help them learn and understand the game as much as i am able. I will go over any parts of your character and the rules for running that character as needed to make sure you feel confident in what your character can do and how to do it.

What AzurDrake brings to the table

I will normally take time to make up custom tokens for Roll20 as I use that for the VTT, I prefer to use Discord for Voice as it allows me to have a handy access to text channels for notes and pics for players to see and use. I do sometimes use SFX or Ambient music but I'm not crazy with it. I do often use character voices for some of the NPC's. My main 'Rule of Cool' is that most any remotely rational thing can work if you roll a crit success, if its funny or cool we can usually find a way. As a storyteller and GM I will usually look at a situation and each characters actions and dice rolls and then weave those things into a narrative that players can envision in 'theatre of the mind'. I do encourage players to speak to each other as their character, but I do not forbid table talk or occasional 'Meta gaming' but I am pretty strict about your character not being able to act on information your character does not posses. You should be able to separate what You as the player knows from what your character knows.

Safety

How AzurDrake creates a safe table

If you have particular issues or trauma around particular topics or subjects please let me know ahead of time, I will do my best to filter those things out, if something slips past me or I forget you can always message me privately as a reminder and I will correct the situation. After a game session I enjoy and encourage the players to discuss the experience and point out what they liked or did not like about the session as we all get to know each other and our playstyles. If for any reason you need to step away from the table or the game session you are always free to do so at any time with no judgement.
