Cult of the Weaver Queen...can you survive?
Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Old-School Essentials | One-Shot
About the adventure
Arianhrod is a little-known goddess of weaving and the moon. Her symbol is a spoked wheel, which represents a spinning wheel as well as the lunar disc. Her followers are few and geographically dispersed, so they travel to other temples periodically to bolster a sense of belonging and to strengthen their faith. A highlight of every acolyte’s training is to accompany their mentor on such a pilgrimage. Each temple dedicated to Arianhrod has a unique name that celebrates an aspect of Arianhrod’s divinity. In this adventure, the acolytes and their mentor, Sorceress Saelia, travel from their home, the Temple of the Waning Moon, to the Temple of Selvedge. The party arrives at the Temple of Selvedge, but it is not the friendly visit they expected. The worshippers here have unusual practices and new interpretations of their goddess’ teachings.
Game style
Dungeon Crawl
A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
After a journey of many days, you approach the Temple of Selvedge. A silver statue of a spider upon its web stands in the middle of a fountain directly ahead. Just past it looms the temple. Instead of a simple, three-room building like the one you came from, it is a sprawling complex of smaller buildings connected by enclosed walkways to a larger, central hub. The front doors are flanked by angled stone walls that rise sharply and are in stark contrast with the flourishing and cozy pastures surrounding the temple. Sheep and goats graze contentedly, crops thrive in well-tended fields, ripening fruit hangs heavily on the branches of trees in tidy orchards, and everywhere chickens scratch at the ground or flap their wings, taking short flights from perch to perch. You are acolytes devoted to Arianhrod, goddess of weaving and the moon, on a pilgrimage with your mentor, Sorceress Saelia. “At last, we’ve arrived,” she says, turning to you with a raised eyebrow. “It’s not quite like our temple, is it?” With a sigh, she says, “Another order, another interpretation of the Weaver. Everyone must put their own mark on things. Come, let’s see how much confusion we’ll be forced to endure in the name of ‘originality’.” When you reach the steps leading up to the front doors, a tall, thin elf emerges from the temple, along with several acolytes of his own. His black robes are embroidered with silver thread in a web-like pattern. “Ah...brothers and sisters of Arianhrod.” His eyes pass over your group, counting heads. To Saelia, he says, “Welcome, Sorceress, to the Temple of Selvedge. I am High Priest Khajook, spiritual leader and principal sorcerer. And you...you’ve brought me the answer to my prayers.”
