Ghosts of Saltmarsh: A new and not so new friendly dnd campaign
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
Step into the iconic Forgotten Realms, a land brimming with ancient magic, legendary creatures, and untold secrets. This campaign is built upon the thrilling Ghosts of Saltmarsh module, where you'll uncover mysteries lurking beneath treacherous waves and confront perilous threats that challenge both your courage and cunning. Setting: Saltmarsh, a sleepy coastal village, stands on the edge of opportunity and ruin. Nestled within the Forgotten Realms, this region serves as the heart of nautical intrigue, where smugglers, sea monsters, and whispers of ghostly hauntings set the tone. From the glittering depths of submerged ruins to the storm-lashed shores, every corner of Saltmarsh holds new discoveries. Play Style: This campaign blends immersive storytelling with dynamic exploration, balancing gritty realism with the fantastical wonder of the Forgotten Realms. Whether you're delving into underwater caverns, battling pirates, or uncovering long-lost relics, each session offers opportunities for heroism and teamwork. As your Dungeon Master, I emphasize collaborative storytelling, engaging combat, and moments of character-driven drama that leave a lasting impact. Perfect for players seeking adventure on the high seas or those intrigued by the eerie and unknown. Grab your gear, brace yourself for stormy waters, and prepare to carve your name into the legends of the Forgotten Realms!
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Combat Heavy
“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

How to prepare
To ensure smooth sailing and a fantastic gaming experience, here’s what players will need: Microphone: A working microphone is mandatory for clear communication during sessions. Please test it ahead of time to avoid any technical hiccups. Webcam (Optional): While a webcam isn’t required, you’re welcome to use one if you'd like to enhance the collaborative experience. Accounts and Programs: Discord: Create or log into your Discord account, as it will be our primary platform for communication and coordination. Talespire: Download Talespire for the virtual tabletop experience, and make sure it's installed and ready to go. PDF Viewer: Having access to a PDF viewer is helpful if you wish to refer to any of the official D&D materials during the game. Character Creation: Complete character creation before Session 1, including rolling stats and tying your backstory into the plot and setting. I’ll provide guidance if needed, and we’ll ensure your character is fully prepared to dive into the adventure. Familiarity with the Rules: A basic understanding of D&D 5e mechanics is recommended, especially for new players. However, I’ll provide guidance and support throughout the campaign, so don’t worry if you’re still learning. Tech Check: Ensure your internet connection is stable and your microphone/software is working properly to avoid disruptions during gameplay.
What I provide
As your Dungeon Master, I provide a fully immersive experience utilizing modern tools and a creative, player-focused approach: Virtual Tabletop (Talespire): Engage with visually stunning 3D maps and environments that bring the Ghosts of Saltmarsh module to life. From mysterious underwater ruins to bustling harbor towns, every scene is crafted for maximum immersion. Discord Integration: Communication is seamless and organized through Discord, allowing for clear audio, text channels, and easy coordination before and after each session. Official D&D PDFs: I use official Dungeons & Dragons materials to ensure accurate content while keeping the story faithful to the module. This also provides access to high-quality, rule-compliant details for a smooth gameplay experience. My GM Style: Character Voices and Narrative Depth: I love bringing NPCs to life with unique voices and personalities, drawing players into the world and making every interaction memorable. Ambient Music and Soundscapes: I use curated soundtracks to enhance the atmosphere, from the creaking of ship masts in Saltmarsh to the haunting echoes of underwater caverns. Intense, Tactical Combat: Battles are dynamic, challenging, and reward creative thinking. I balance encounters to be engaging for all skill levels while encouraging teamwork and strategic planning. Collaborative Storytelling: While I respect the Rules as Written, I embrace the Rule of Cool to ensure fun and creativity take precedence. If a player's idea is awesome and fits the story, I'll find a way to make it work. Players can expect a game that is immersive, balanced, and designed with their enjoyment in mind. Whether you're drawn to heart-pounding combat or rich character roleplay, my goal is to create a memorable adventure for everyone.
Gameplay details
As your Dungeon Master, I prioritize creating a safe and inclusive environment where every player feels comfortable expressing themselves and enjoying the game. Here's how I integrate safety tools into every session: Lines and Veils Document: Before the campaign begins, I'll provide a digital Lines and Veils document. This allows players to confidentially specify topics or themes they’d like to avoid (Lines) or approach with caution (Veils). Session 0: During Session 0, we’ll set expectations, introduce characters, discuss house rules, and collaboratively review the Lines and Veils document. We'll also go over the X, N, & O system and clarify how these signals can be used throughout the game. X, N, & O Signals: I utilize digital tools to make these signals simple and accessible. Players can message me directly or use video cues during online sessions to indicate if they’re feeling uncomfortable (X), neutral and willing to adjust (N), or fully enthusiastic (O). Aftercare: At the end of each session, I check in with players individually to ensure that everyone feels good about what transpired. This space also offers a chance to reflect on character arcs or adjust upcoming content based on player feedback. Gameplay Details: Expect engaging exploration, meaningful choices, and character-driven narratives. I weave dynamic challenges into the story, including puzzles, combat scenarios, and moral dilemmas. My goal is to strike a balance between thrilling adventure and emotional depth, ensuring each session leaves players excited for the next chapter.

How will character creation work
Character creation will take place before the first session to ensure we're ready to dive straight into the adventure when the campaign begins. Here's how it will work: Rolling Stats: Players will roll their stats using the traditional method (4d6, drop the lowest roll). I'll guide you through the process and provide tips to balance and optimize your characters. Starting Level: Characters will begin at Level 1, allowing you to grow and develop them naturally as the story unfolds. Tying Characters to the Plot: Each character's backstory will be intricately connected to the module’s setting in Saltmarsh and the overarching themes of the Forgotten Realms. Whether you're a hardened sailor with ties to local smugglers or a curious scholar investigating the supernatural phenomena in the area, we'll work together to weave your character's story into the fabric of the campaign. Reference Materials: You are welcome to use any official Dungeons & Dragons 5e books for character creation, such as the Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. If you have questions about homebrew or unofficial content, we can discuss its compatibility with the campaign.
