All I Wanted Was a Drink - Waterdeep, Dragon Heist

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Ahh, Waterdeep, the City of Splendours. Largest city in the Forgotten Realms, a place where fortunes are made and lost, heroes rise from the most unlikely places, and great and villainous deeds happen every day. You are a newly-formed band of adventurers enjoying a pleasant evening at the Yawning Portal tavern. What starts out as a normal night leads to a bar brawl, a meeting with a famous patron and a treasure hunt for a fortune in gold hidden somewhere in the city. Over the course of the adventure, you will brush shoulders with some of Waterdeep’s most famous, influential, powerful (and dangerous) people and groups. With a decrepit tavern/residence up for grabs, you might find yourself in possession of a place to call home, to build contacts and maybe even turn into something greater down the road! This adventure is intended for players who have a basic knowledge of the game, but may not be entirely familiar with the nuts and bolts of the rules. If you know how the core mechanics work, and understand character creation, this adventure is for you!

How to prepare

Please have at least a microphone. Webcams are encouraged but not required (I'll be using one). Read the Players' Handbook. You don't have to memorize the whole thing, but at least be comfortable with character creation, classes, species and equipment. Read up on cantrips and first level spells if that's relevant to your classes. A sense of humour is always a great idea when playing D&D, because things can get weird. Don't forget snacks and drinks if you want them!

What I provide

D&D Beyond - the official Wizards of the Coast site for D&D rules. We'll host our campaign and characters there, as well I'll be using the published adventure from there. Rule of Cool - if it's awesome but not covered by the rules, we can figure something out. Even if we have to bend a few rules to make it happen. Theatre of the Mind - I'll show images and maybe maps as needed, but most combat encounters and descriptions will take place in our collective imagination. I have a strange sense of humour that will often creep into games I run. I literally can't stop myself, so expect occasional bits of silliness from time to time. Despite this, I am not running a comedy campaign. While not a member of the LGBTQ family myself, my partner is, and I am a firm ally.

Gameplay details

We'll schedule one fifteen minute break in every session, generally times around plot points or the like. Players can always suggest a brief pause to get up, stretch their legs and, if they're uncomfortable in the direction the content is heading, let me know. Otherwise we'll be using X, N and O cards via private chat to me to indicate lines players don't want to cross.

How will character creation work

Session Zero will have everyone get together, introduce ourselves and create characters. We'll be doing a point-buy system so that everyone starts on the same foot stat-wise. If it's in the Players' Handbook, it's probably fine.
