Monster of the Week: Take Me Home, Country Roads

Monster of the Week: Take Me Home, Country Roads

Monster of the Week | Campaign

About the adventure

Hezekiah "Uncle Zeke" Caine lived a long life for a monster hunter. His days actively tracking down the things that go bump in the night are long behind him, but even in his twilight years, he was happy to be a pillar of the community, offering his expertise however he could from his humble trailer home in the deserts of Arizona. Hezekiah Caine is dead. As part of his will, he has requested his ashes be brought to the Caine family cabin in Pennsylvania via Betsy, Uncle Zeke's beloved Winnebago, and scattered amongst his ancestors. You are one of the people performing this task. And when someone as legendary as Uncle Zeke has fallen, who knows what will be on the road to meet you. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a Monster Of The Week campaign inspired by high-Americana stories of the supernatural like Preacher, Old Gods of Appalachia, Welcome to Night Vale, and... well, Supernatural. It's a road trip story, so there is a definitive end, but what's waiting for you at the Caine cabin and what you encounter on the road to get there will be the fun part. Please join us on this journey to lay an old man's soul to rest.

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

I would much prefer to have my players on mic and camera, and any distractions (i.e., children, pets) kept to an absolute minimum. You will need dice (just 2d6), and while I will provide PDFs of the books, you may want your own copy to peruse at your leisure.

What I provide

I am a voice actor, and will do my best to impart the NPCs with a life of their own. My games are very "Theater Of The Mind;" I don't use VTTs or minis, and most areas are very abstract. I also like employing the Rule Of Cool; especially in a game like MotW that is more focused on the story being told rather than any sort of fiddly detail bits. Finally, I will have music, both an ambient soundtrack for the game, as well as a playlist of songs that inspire it.

Gameplay details

For starters, any of the mentioned items in the Content Warnings area are up for debate; your safety and comfort is more important than my ability to touch on an edgy or potentially triggering story beat. We will have an extensive session zero to discuss lines and veils, as well as other safety tools in play, such as the X Card and the Red Rule. We will also use this session to establish character relationships, not just to the deceased, but to each other. Failure to respect the religion, gender, sexuality, neurotype, ability, or race of another player at the table is grounds for immediate removal from the campaign and Discord server. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of slurs, even if no one at the table is a member of the group to whom the slur is targeted.

How will character creation work

Character Creation will be part of session zero. MotW's character creation process is exceedingly simple, and it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes total. I am disallowing the following playbooks; The Chosen, The Pararomantic I am also restricting The Divine; I would rather players didn't use that playbook, but if your concept is strong enough, I might allow it.
