Strixhaven University | Your Course Choice Matters!

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Welcome to Strixhaven University, the multiverse's premiere place of learning for those with an interest in the Arcane, no matter the nature. This campaign is ideal for new players but has plenty for an experienced player to enjoy. So no matter your level of experience, even if you've never played, this could be a good campaign for you. There is more of an emphasis on roleplay in this campaign, but with a healthy amount of combat and puzzles. The idea is that many of the sidequests you will get can be solved by violent means, but there will often, not always but often, be a better solution. It will rarely be as fast, though. The campaign itself is at least the first year of the module, with plenty of extra stuff added in. Nothing to make it harder to understand, just filling in the gaps where Wizards of the Coast mentioned something like it mattered and did nothing with it. Of course, the remaining 3 years of education are available, but only if the group wants to keep going. My version of Strixhaven is also not in its usual place in the multiverse, but in Exandria- the world of Critical Role. It allows me to have a clearer of what is where in the world, and I can plan field trips!

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

Players will need a mic, a stable internet connection, and access to a computer and web browser. It is preferred that players are familiar with the basic rules, but need not know the minutiae of every bit of content. Only Discord and a web browser are needed, 2 tabs open on the web browser, one for D&D Beyond, one for Roll20. Or use D&D Beyond on your phone, that works too. Players do not need to be familiar with Exandria or Critical Role, but it could help with some parts of coming up with a character.

What I provide

I bring all of my official content on D&D Beyond, the maps and tokens on the VTT Roll20, along with a large amount of homebrew and 3rd party content, though most aren't necessary. As a GM, I am fairly rules-focused. But that's not to say that you can't push the rules. Generally, creative use of spells and abilities is encouraged, but I reserve the right to deny a plan if it's too far from the intended use and design of that ability.

Gameplay details

Session 0 is mostly going over character creation and the rules we're going to use. We likely will not use any variant rules to keep it simple. In terms of Lines and Veils, it is an informal conversation. Most people have the same things they want to fully avoid, but if there's anything I might stumble close to since it is less common, I do (in those cases) make a physical note.

How will character creation work

Characters will be created at level 1, almost all official content will be allowed, as will a large amount of homebrew and third-party content. For this, players will be invited to make a character on D&D Beyond, and we will go through the whole process in Session 0. Characters also don't need to be from Exandria. Strixhaven is a multiversal place of learning, and you can get there from anywhere.
