Sci-fi Drama Roadtrip Roleplay! | High Roleplay, Rules-Light!

The Electric State Roleplaying Game | Campaign

About the adventure

It's 500 miles to home, and there's only one way to get there. Pack your things as tightly as you can and hop in the driver's seat. You are taking a journey from the west coast shoreline to the inner part of the state of Pacifica, a post-war remnant of California. The landscape is varied, but everywhere in the cities and highways can be seen the vestiges of war. Broken robots, derelict bunkers, rotting tanks. People live in stratified communities, relying more on each other than anyone in the government. Whatever your reason for travel, come along on this slowburn, dramatic journey across Pacifica. See the countryside and the coast, witness what remains after war and how the people left are affected. Meet colorful characters and unique communities. Experience wild scifi consequences to mind-altering technology. Explore the land around you. Find meaning in your travel, and hope that the destination is everything you want it to be. This is a high-roleplay, high-drama mini-campaign, set in the Electric State universe that was laid out by Simon Stalenhag. Each player will take the role of a unique traveler who, for one reason or another, needs to get out of Pacifica. Journey together, an unlikely crew on a roadtrip to hopefully someplace better.

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

How to prepare

Once you're part of the game, I'll send you access to a link for both a Discord group and a link to the game manual. You don't need to read through everything, but having a basic understanding of what stats exist and what they mean is a great start. The Electric State is very rules light and flavor heavy, so I feel confident that, even if you knew nothing about it, you'd catch on quickly! Especially if you're familiar with other games like Candela Obscura, ALIEN RPG, or Vaesen.

What I provide

I will bring a full orchestra of music, travel visuals, maps of important locations, sound effects for damn near everything that can make noise, and a large cast of unusual voices and accents for each NPC you'll encounter. I hope you bring your own character voice!

Gameplay details

This will be a gritty, grounded campaign with intense themes of mental illness, war, poverty, body horror, and addiction. In Session 0, I will go over all the themes present in this campaign and will explain how each one may manifest itself during play. If anyone is made uncomfortable by these themes, I will do my absolute best to work around it to avoid unwanted triggers.
