How to prepare

You’ll need a Discord account and a microphone and (optional) webcam during game sessions. Print out your playbook and bring a pencil and two six-sided dice for each session. The playbook is available on the game Discord and we’ll chat about character ideas there. You don’t need to know the rules to play Root. I look forward to helping you learn how to play when we meet your cute animal vagabond!

What I provide

As your GM, I'm your biggest fan, ready to breathe life into your band of vagabonds and the woodland they call home. My role is to champion your adventures, building a story you’ll laugh about and remember long after the session’s over. After each session, you'll receive a recap of your madcap escapades along with an illustration capturing a memorable moment. If you're curious, I drew the advert image for this game – my career as an artist has been built on drawing cute animals, so Root is the perfect game for my obsession! Root thrives on collaborative storytelling, ensuring you're never railroaded into a predetermined plot. Together, we'll explore the vast woodland, encountering distinctive and memorable NPCs (building my repertoire of voices and accents) and witnessing the profound and lasting impact your vagabonds have. As a queer and disabled person, I prioritise inclusivity and respect. Your access needs are always welcome, fostering a safe and welcoming space for all kinds of vagabonds.

Gameplay details

As storytellers in Root, you shape the world's boundaries and themes. During Session 0 or when welcoming a new player, we'll chat about the tone and content you're comfortable with. You'll get a Lines and Veils document to note any topics you'd rather avoid, and we'll keep an open dialogue throughout. Root empowers you to craft your tale, with rules stepping in only when necessary. Your enjoyment is our priority, so we'll always guide the narrative toward your preferred story.

How will character creation work

Character creation is a collaborative affair with Root, so you don’t need to do much before you begin. The playbooks are available via the game Discord or you can download them from Magpie Games’ page for Root. Have a look for two or three playbooks that appeal and think of the kind of creature you’d like to play. We’ll build your vagabond’s back-story together on Discord, during Session Zero or on a half-hour call before your first session to get you set up. The seeds you sow with contacts and conflicts will grow into the themes and stories of the campaign.
