Call of Cthulhu Learn to Play: The Lightless Beacon

Call of Cthulhu | One-Shot

About the adventure

Intended for groups of up to five players, The Lightless Beacon is specifically designed to build confidence in new players with a short adventure, and includes four pregenerated characters for quick-start play. The storyline involves a group of investigators who are shipwrecked and washed ashore on Beacon Island, a rocky outcrop in the Atlantic Ocean which is home to an ominously dark lighthouse. Unfortunately for the group, the island has been infested with Deep Ones, and they now face a frantic battle for survival. Seats are $5.

How to prepare

All players are expected to have a functional webcam and mic. You will need to be able to access Roll20. You do NOT need to know the rules for Call of Cthulhu.

What I provide

This game will be played via Roll20 and includes pregens that are designed for the introductory experience. That said, you are welcome to bring your own new Investigator if you have created one! I strongly believe that narrative-driven games like Call of Cthulhu need to use the printed rules as guidelines; I stick to them as much as is necessary but for a really impactful or appropriate event we can bend those rules as much as needed - just paint me a word picture of how your interpretation of the rules supports your request and desire!

Gameplay details

This game is not intended to glorify gore, insanity, or any such related topics. While they are present in the many realms of Call of Cthulhu, I will do my best to steer our experience into narratively-impactful methods by which we can explore those things without delving into the empty sensationalism that "shock and awe" games can deliver. At the beginning of the session, I outline our safety tools. Communication is KEY and CENTRAL in gaming, especially in games such as Call of Cthulhu, and we must respect each other's ability to communicate effectively. To that end, I do require that everyone have access to and make regular use of both their mics and their cameras. We will be using X/N/O in addition to the Deck of Player Safety but body language is a huge indicator of potential issues and I spend a lot of my time at the table reading body language so that I can better determine if I need to pull back on certain topics. As always, players are encouraged to simply say "let's move on"; I know that I will do so if the need arises.

How will character creation work

This game includes pregens, or you can bring your own brand-new Investigator. As a one-shot introductory game, I don't suggest spending too much time creating your own; let's explore the rules and the scenario content together and enjoy our experience!
