Those Who Melt: MotW--Bad Things | One-Shot

Monster of the Week | One-Shot

About the adventure

In our Monster of the Week: Bad Things one-shot adventures, your hunter is allied with a loose band of other cryptid seekers, all of whom are just trying to make the world a better, safer place where the regular folk don't get eaten on a regular basis. Unfortunately, that's a harder goal to achieve than one might think. Join us as we play the Monster of the Week RPG, a fast-paced, easy-to-learn system based on TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Grimm, and others. All you need are two six-sided dice, some imagination, and a desire to get a little bit spooked.

Recruiting notes

In a small, Midwestern town people have started melting. Believers call it 'spontaneous combustion'; the authorities call it murder; you, however, are monster hunters and you know better. You're not sure exactly what is causing the people of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri to melt, but you know that whatever it is, you can hunt it ... and stop it.

What a load of fun that was. I really enjoyed this little monster of the week one shot. Especially knowing it was crafted by himself I am very happy with the way the story turned out. He was able to smoothly incorporate a late joines. A patient man who was very good at explaining this new system to me. This was exactly what I wanted. And I also liked that even though it was a one shot he interacted a nice bit with the little background story I wrote for my oc. Yeah. Thanks for the game my dude. I will come back.

Was kind enough to let me in to the campaign even though I was late. I'm a beginner and understood the game very well and had a lot of fun! The music and visuals also made it immersive, which was nice.

Tried monster of the week for the first time with C. Patrick and it was pretty amazing! He made an unfamiliar system very easy to understand, allowing us to easily get into the gameplay. Very good pacing and plenty of very scary action combined with the visual aids made the story feel real and frightening. Definitely recommend checking out this amazing dude of a gm!!!

The GM was great at setting the scene and explaining the entry of the story. The introduction of the characters and detailing a rumor about one another helped get the group aligned and playing together. The intro into the story line was well developed and easy to follow along. The GM was quick to answer any questions and knew the rules. It was understood that the one-shot was developed around learn to paly, but the combat was still fun and challenging. I recommend the GM and look forward to joining a future one-shot. Keep up the great work!

How to prepare

You'll need a computer/phone/tablet/something and a decent mic for connecting to our Discord voice channel. And you'll need to logon to Roll20 before the game (SEE Prep Materials) to choose a Playbook and create a hunter. And that's about all you'll need.

What I provide

Our Monster of the Week games are primarily playing using Theater of the Mind and physical (or .pdf) versions of the Playbooks (available on Google Drive; SEE Prep Materials). I'll provide a space on Discord (SEE Prep Materials) for pre-game chatter, as well as a voice channel for game-day play. You are welcome to use the digital dice on our Discord server or use your own physical or digital dice. I'll provide everything else: custom-built mysteries, evocative imagery and background music, and even a few poorly-executed character voices.

Gameplay details

Lines and veils for our Monster of the Week games include: * Lines (avoid these): Sexual assault and/or harassment; bigotry; racism; animal cruelty * Veils ("fade to black"): Sexual encounters; torture Please let me know if you have any lines/veils you would like added to this list for the specific session you'll be playing in. Our primary safety tool is the 'X' card or, as Sly Flourish's Mike Shea phrases it, "Let's pause for a moment." If something comes up that makes you uncomfortable, or if you have a question about how your or another player's character's actions are going to affect the whole group, or even if you (or the Keeper) just wants to check in to see how people are doing, just say "Let's pause for a moment". NOTE: this can also be done anonymously by messaging the Keeper privately, if you so desire.
