Death of a Mountebank

Death of a Mountebank

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Karlow Fassbender, a sometime petty thief and fulltime wannabe catburglar, was found floating face down in the River Wutjörn, in Craysilt's Southdock Slums neighborhood. Having been a small time crook, in the eyes of the law, The Craysilt Garda will not pay for a more thorough investigation into his death. Karlow's funeral and burial were paid for by an anonymous donor, saving the bard's body from a pauper's burial in a common grave. Soon after the funeral, a poster went up on the job boards in Craysilt: "Wanted: investigators for a sensitive job in Southdock Slums. Good money, good perks. Meet Greer at the Gilded Goose Terndæ night. Ask for me at the bar." It is signed by Greer Barron. It is now Terndæ night, and you have come to the Gilded Goose looking for work. The bartender points out a clean cut young man sitting at a corner table when you ask for Greer...and the adventure begins!

It was not what I expected, but it was far more useful than if it had been. Harlen kinda takes the time to fill in the blanks about running a game that the books leave out. Not as many nuts and bolts and more finding the right questions to ask yourself in preparation to tell a story with this game.

Harlen is an amazing DM! Not only does he makes his players feel safe at his table, but he also a fantastic storyteller. He has an incredibly rich world that is complex and fun to explore. He is committed to make sure that all the players are having fun while being challenging by very creative fights and ennemies. And I also have to mention hid maps. His maps are completely bonkers - they are gorgeous, immersive and so easy to use. You are looking for your next dm? Harlen is your guy. He is going to make your dnd campaign next level.

Harlen let me in a group that plays on Thursday and I've never regretted it! He saw the campaign start to finish and my charecter fit in with the entire group and I'm definetly playing in the next one, it was great start to finish to see a charecter fully finish a campaign and end in such a fun way. His stories and lore always make me curious and want to explore it won't let me pick more than 3 tags but he's great with voices and telling stories and the maps he makes all by hand are amazing!

Harlen’s great at working with the players to make fun and memorable encounters, whether it’s facing down an awakened ship or chatting with that one kid who knows a bit too much about everyone else’s business.

Harlen is an incredible storyteller and world builder. The amount of detail and effort he has put into his world is utterly breathtaking, and the narration of said world is magnificently captivating. So many times I have been blown away by the answers that he has to literally any question I have about the world or it’s inhabitants. He also knows how to let the players have their moments, and despite the ridiculously chaotic nature of our group he is always willing to roll with our intentions - no matter how derailing they are to his story. He is patient, he is kind, he is a wonderful human being and you should take the opportunity to play a game in his world, you will not regret it.

Harlen's worldbuilding is amazing. He's incredibly understanding of schedule conflicts and availability woes, safe for all walks of life, and his biggest interest is the fun to be had playing games with one another.

How to prepare

You will need a roll20 account, and we also use Discord for the voice and video aspect. Cameras are encouraged, but not required to play in this game.

What I provide

We will be using roll20 as a VTT, and Discord for voice and video. I make all the maps, and write all the stories, myself. This setting has been evolving through gameplay for twenty odd years, and has become a lovely place to waste some time in while playing games. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you!

Gameplay details

If, at any time, there is something in the game making you uncomfortable, just DM me and it will stop. I will need no explanation, I will just make it stop. This is meant to be fun for all of us, and there is no reason we cannot make that happen.
