About the adventure

"Where love turned to hate created land and lore, history shall repeat itself once more. For above the tower where the caged bird sings, the prince shall weep aloft dark wings." - Hyskosa the Dukkar You and the rest of your adventuring party have found yourselves in the isolated valley of Barovia, a land of gothic dread cloaked in mist. Here, the sun rarely shines, and shadows conceal ancient secrets. Your task is to unravel the mysteries of Castle Ravenloft, confront the enigmatic Count Strahd, and decide the fate of this cursed land. Follow your path through dark forests, dreary towns, and haunted houses to learn of the curse of Strahd, or let the cards decide your fate. Either way, you are not alone in your journey as others are willing to stand against the tyranny of the count. Rumors even tell of a famed hunter entering the lands to help end the misery. However, be warned: this realm's lord rules with an iron fist. He is ancient. He is the land. You are merely trespassers.

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Dungeon Crawl

A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

How to prepare

Players will need: - A working microphone. - A Discord account. - A Roll20 account.

What I provide

- A private discord server for players to chat and make posts. - A Roll20 pro account that allows dynamic lighting and the new Jumpgate features to improve the flow of gameplay. - The core 2024 and 2014 rules and a few supplements and expansions shared through the Roll20 compendium, including "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft". - Voicemod will help change my voice for different characters and add soundboards for some sound effects.

Gameplay details

I will provide a document and checklist for any table rules, lines, and veils that need to be covered. We can take 10-15 minute breaks during longer sessions if needed. This is an open-door campaign, so players can come and go as required. Please inform me if you won't attend a session or need to leave early. If any issues arise, we can discuss how to improve future games.

How will character creation work

Here are some guidelines for character creation: - Character sheets will be available to create and edit on the journal tab on Roll20. - You can use the character creator feature to simplify building your adventurer or start from scratch. - The starting level is 1 and you can decide between the three methods of finding your character's stats. - You can use the rules provided in the Roll20 compendium. However, you can inquire about using other references as well that can be edited into your sheet. - If you just want to jump in without all the complicated steps of making a character, Roll20 provides several premade ones you can select to start playing!
