About the adventure

Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia. Far below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms the barest hint of a smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came — all according to his plan. A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air. The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited. Welcome to Barovia! Curse of Strahd is a gothic horror D&D adventure, built to take adventurers from their first steps up to level ten, trapped in the Land of Mists to confront the dark lord of the land. Anguish lies in every corner, and dark things lie beneath the earth which should remain there. Bordering the infamous Shadowfell, Barovia is a land not to be taken lightly, and the dark powers which vie to entrap you into their service are not to be trusted, but when confronting a horror so great, what is a mortal to do? Cast In Blood will experience the grim telling of the Curse of Strahd module, as well as additions which will enhance the bleak and dismal world, and either forge the bonds that keep the adventurers together, or slowly peel them apart. The exploration of Barovia will be a slower burn than normal, as time will be spent allowing each member of the vampire hunters to explore and experience the land of Barovia at their own pace. An extensive start is crafted to ensure players will enter into Barovia with some experience and skill, providing some comfort in the idea that they can't return home until their quest is complete. Beyond the typical module adventure, various upgrades and improvements to the lands of Barovia will ensure the adventurers have all they need to confront Strahd and end his rule.

About me

• Hello and welcome! I’m Robert, but everyone calls me Riko. It’s great to have you here, and I’d like to go over a bit of who I am and what you can expect from me as a Dungeon Master. To note, I am a CST time zone Dungeon Master, and am available typically from 12 PM CST to 8 PM CST, but I often make time for my players when need be! • Who is Riko? I’ve been running D&D games professionally for about four years, and have been a DM for the past decade now, since 5th edition of D&D released and a bit before with 3.5 edition. Ever since I learned there was a game you could be a powerful necromancer, master of armies and magister supreme, I’ve had a love for the game on a personal level, and once learning of all the stories you can tell with D&D, I fell in love with all of it as a whole. I run modules of 5th edition professionally, but each one of them is heavily changed with enough spice that it feels like a whole new meal to sink your teeth into. Having run adventures from first to twentieth level, I consider myself well informed on the balance and concepts of D&D from head to toe! My adventures are typically high fantasy and with some adventures dark horror, but I find the darkest places are where lights shine brightest, a theme that always holds a place in my heart as a DM. Personally, my favorite part of D&D is our collaborative storytelling. Each character you bring to my table has some fate to unfold, for better or worse, and it’s my job to make sure we get there together! I bring the verisimilitude, and you bring the excitement. Laughing and going over the details of what dangers and excitement we encounter together is what I love most about D&D, and it’s hard to pick a most favorite part! I want to bring you into the worlds and live in them for the time I have you, and get lost somewhere along the way in it all. • What to expect? - Access to most sourcebooks of D&D available on roll20, as well as tools to create exactly the kind of character you’re hoping to bring to life. - Introductory lessons on how to build characters, and tailored pacing of adventuring to ensure maximum chances of success. - Custom made maps designed through Dungeondraft and Inkarnate, to bring the various world crafted to life. - A welcoming space for new players, and for veterans, to co-mingle and take on the challenges of Wizards of the Coast, including hours of expanded, homebrew content to enhance every experience. Players ask me why I do what I do, and I have one simple answer: I love Dungeons and Dragons. I genuinely hope to have you at my tables, and to share that dedication and love I have for the game for a long time to come!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created in a session 0, which will be held at the same time a typical session is expected to be held one week before the official start date. Characters will be created and maintained through Roll20, however, D&D Beyond integration is accessible; if using D&D Beyond, a sheet will need to be maintained in Roll20 and up to date for the DM's use. Character creation will start at level 1, but if any adventurers join beyond the initial start date, they will be made at the same level the rest of the table is at, to avoid any power discrepancy.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players are expected to have access to Discord and a working microphone. Players are expected to have a Roll20 account as well, but knowledge of the system is not required: tutorials on how to operate the system are provided by the DM in special sit-downs to get new players accustomed to the process. Players will need to provide character art, owned or borrowed, to create character tokens.

What Riko brings to the table

The DM has access to Roll20 premium services, and dungeons will be lit with the Dynamic Lighting feature. Most, if not all, scenes will include maps, either provided by the module or found supplements to enhance the experience. Any extra content, such as D&D Beyond core rulebooks, or Roll20 add-ons, are not available from the DM.

Safety

How Riko creates a safe table

Each session will meet a half an hour early in order to prepare various aspects of the game, such as streaming to Twitch, informing players of what is generally expected for the session (affectionately known as a "pre-cap") and answering any major questions the table may have. Curse Of Strahd: Cast In Blood will feature a typical module experience, but roleplay and planning is highly encouraged: Barovia is a dangerous place, and often the party will be all they have to confront the horrors of the dark realm. Often, when the party makes a plan to tackle the next obstacle, that will be the major focus of the session, but each session is tailored to match whatever idea the party wants to confront, from stocking on supplies, speaking to NPCs, and so on.
