Ascent of the Astral Tower (Beginner to Intermediate Experience)

Ascent of the Astral Tower (Beginner to Intermediate Experience)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Above your party, the sky is a canvas of dark velvet, dotted with the familiar twinkle of stars. But tonight, something is terribly wrong. The stars, one by one, have been plummeting from their celestial perches, streaking through the sky like silver tears and landing with thunderous crashes across the horizon. As each star falls, it leaves behind a void, an unsettling darkness that seems to hunger for the light. The townsfolk have been gathering in the town square, eyes wide with terror and wonder. You stand among them, hearts pounding as you witness the heavens weeping stardust. Suddenly, the ground beneath your feet trembles, a low rumble that grows into a deafening roar above the meteoric fall of the stars. From the center of the sky, where the stars once shone brightest, an iridescent glow begins to spread. Emerging from this ethereal light, a castle of impossible beauty and otherworldly design takes form. Its spires twist and shimmer, refracting the remaining light of the dying stars, its form shifting and switching every time the light refracts over its iridescent surface. The castle hovers above the burning town, casting a surreal glow over the chaos below. Your friends can feel the magic radiating from this apparition in the sky, a force that tugs at your very souls and mana coursing through your veins. The air grows thick with the scent of ozone and burning wood across the countryside, and an unspoken question hangs in the air: what is the purpose of this spectral fortress as the heavens themselves seem to be crashing into the earth. As you exchange glances with your companions, a powerful voice echoes through your minds, ancient and commanding. "Heed my call. Ascend the skies themselves and lend me your aid in returning my domain to its place above the crust of your planet."

How to prepare

Please have a reliable webcam and microphone available for use during the session! Having either a digital or printed version of your character sheet will be incredibly helpful for both the GM and yourself to keep track of spells, traits, abilities, etc. No software is necessary other than the free version of Zoom (I have Zoom Premium for longer calls and recording if desired by the party!) I would ask that everyone have a set of real dice they can use, I find it to be one more element that keeps us all engaged in the gameplay especially when playing digitally!

What I provide

I have my own dice and generally have all PC's character sheets pulled up for me on my monitors for reference. I'll do my best to provide some kind of visual reference/representation of what is happening in-game for those who may need additional help. I also utilize a small soundboard on my devices and will occasionally use basic AI generated backgrounds/profile images to give visual cues for those who seek additional aids for immersion and understanding.

Gameplay details

On my end there is a fair amount of planning with some general story beats we may or may not hit in a session and that's okay! There is some mild exploring with tense elements in our early game but will focus mostly on roleplaying and building out the characters relationships with one another and the world around them! Asking questions and taking in the scene is important to staying safe and present in the more tense moments that may occur later in the game!

How will character creation work

A short Zoom session right before the first session would be optimal to assure cohesion and minimal class overlap going into the campaign, if you have a character you'd like to use that you've already fabricated we can use that! (with additional buffing/nerfing if necessary for balance). This mini session should last no longer than 20 minutes and should help us establish some early expectations and rapport as DM and player, as well as give time to find some key characteristics and identifiers of your in game character. If this does not work for you, you can always come with pre made characters ready for roleplay and action!
