May the Circle be Unbroken- Learn to Play Candela Obscura!

Candela Obscura | Campaign

About the adventure

You awake in the dead of night from a troubled sleep marked with dreams, omens, and nightmares with the distinct knowledge that it is coming for you. Gathering your protective charms and investigation gear before even your clothes, you head out into the dank night, heading for the Chapter House. Warmth. Comfort. Safety in numbers. You don't even make it a third of the way there. Turning down a dark alley, a shadow of menacing intent lunges at you from the cover of some garbage. Stumbling back, you do what you're trained to do. Raising your handgun and a banishment charm, you begin to shout the ancient words to ward against such evil. Will you survive? Can your allies reach you in time? Do you turn the tables against the creature? What mysteries lie in the heart of the gilded age city slowly being corrupted by secret magic and monsters? If you join the secret society Candela Obscura, all these questions and more will become the norm in your life.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

Webcams are not necessary. Mic is required. Use of a web browser such as Chrome that is capable of running Roll20 is necessary. As far as rules comprehension the Roll20 game will have a rule compendium that anyone can study at any time. The system is very narrative focused and relatively light on rules, so players will have plenty of time to learn the crunch. Roll20 will also handle character sheets and dice rolling.

What I provide

I have access to the Candela Obscura Roll20 module and rules compendium, which comes with detailed maps to work with, as well as a searchable rules document that I will provide guidance in using. I will guide them through the flavor of the setting so they can get the full immerse themselves in the system. If something is not covered by the rules, I'll make it work with over a decade of roleplaying experience. I will bring immersive soundscapes that will make you feel the cobbles of Newfaire through your boots.

Gameplay details

Welcome, from new players to experienced hands, to the world of Candela Obscura by Darrington Press, of Critical Role fame! You will play a recent recruit into the Candela Obscura, Newfaire's secret protectors from the dangers of corruptive magical energies and creatures run rampant. Other Chapters are losing members at an alarming rate, and it will be up to you to investigate. Your tight-knit unit of muscle, scholars, criminals, and mystics will solve mysteries, fight monsters from beyond the Flare, and try to give aid and comfort to those who are harmed by the forces of Magic. Before Session 0- Monte Cook's Consent in Gaming Checklist will be filled out and shared with the GM so I can tailor the experience to my players. Some things are not so negotiable (Candela Obscura is a horror game), but I can turn down certain features or crank others up depending on the needs of my players. During Session 0- We will discuss our lines and veils openly so we can have an enjoyable collaborative time with one another. I will do my best not to alienate or trigger anyone else in the group, and I expect the same from all players in the game. Session 1 and Beyond-X's, N's, and O's can be sent in DM's to me over discord, with a polite reminder to "check your DM's" if I'm caught up in the moment. If you feel comfortable sharing them with everyone, you may also send them in public chat or show them over video. After each session there will be a brief aftercare and discussion, and during the week between game my inbox is always open to discuss things in greater detail and length if it is needed.

How will character creation work

Character creation and crew creation will be done in session 0/0.5, utilizing the character creation rules in the book. If extra time is needed for character creation we will try to do it in the game's discord. The Roll20 server has the full rules compendium, so even if you don't have the book/pdf you should be able to create a character even without my help, but I will give as much assistance as you need. If your character falls, becomes unplayable, or you're just not feeling them, we can always discuss making a new one.
