Monster of the Week | Campaign
About the adventure
Dubbed The Chicago Mothman, wherever it's appeared, trouble has followed. The dead stir and monsters prowl the streets in its wake. Sightings have been popping up all over the city. Each time someone has had a close encounter with this creature they've been left with a dark shadow hanging over their head. You and several others who are afflicted by the Mothman were recruited by a secret organization aimed at understanding the paranormal. You learn that your affliction is called a Hex and they may provide benefits that you didn't realize right away. As you learn more about these hexes you'll uncover the truth behind the Chicago Mothman. Is it truly a threat, or merely a harbinger of something far deadlier? In this custom 20-30 session campaign you'll get to: • Explore the paranormal side of Chicago • Investigate hauntings and monstrous attacks • Communicate with and exorcise ghosts and other spirits • Encounter Vampires, werewolves, ghouls, trolls and more in the dark alley's of Chicago • Uncover the secrets behind the city’s recent flood of supernatural activity • Save the city, and the world?
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.
Current party is made up of a Spellslinger, a Flake, and a Spooktacular. New players can have a short 1-1 session 0 or we can message to get you up to speed on the current party.

What I provide
As a GM I strive to empower players to have fun and bring out what they want to see in the game. I view TTRPGs as a shared story where the players are in the diver's seat and the GM is narrating what they encounter along the way. I am very pro-Rule of Cool as long as it's not completely breaking the tenuous hold the game has on reality. I have a soundtrack that I've made for this campaign so we can all vibe to some appropriate tunes while we play. We won't be using maps or tokens really but the character sheets and a few other tools within Roll20 are really useful and make it very easy to pick up and play if you're new to Monster of the Week
Gameplay details

How will character creation work
We'll handle character creation in session 0. It's a very simple process and the Roll20 tools will make it even simpler. Each player character was recruited to the F.I.R.E Squad because they had a recent encounter with an entity that is tied up in the paranormal events. Possibly a near-death experience, or perhaps you witnessed a horrific accident. Whatever the event was you saw a dark winged figure with intense red eyes. You came away from the event touched by the otherworld in some way. Aside from your chosen playbook abilities you'll start with a narrative focused curse afflicting you. We'll work out the details in session 0.
